The trail starts out going past Montgomery reservoir on a fairly bumpy gravel/dirt road. After a while, after wrapping around the reservoir for about ¾ of a mile, you come to the trailhead. The trailhead is where the Magnolia Mine sits. This is a nice place to get a photo opportunity. You can walk around in the mine complex, and there is a nice little creek running by, also nice for some nature shots. The first obstacle is basically right at the trailhead. Stock vehicles can maneuver through, but will need spotting. Once past this, it is a nice winding trail with some interesting mud holes and outcroppings of rocks. The second obstacle is more technical than the first, and will need spotting and careful placement of tires. Low gears are a MUST for this trail. The high elevation and the sometimes extreme pitches require a good crawling ratio. A very large mud bog separates the second and third obstacles. This mud bog is deep, and has rocks hidden within it. Speed will just break something in this bog. The third obstacle is a very long and steep hill climb with loose rock and dirt. Once again, here is where low gears pay off. The fourth obstacle is “the waterfall”. It is a “V” shaped rock outcropping, and tire placement is the key to this obstacle. It is not just a straight shot through though- this obstacle wraps around a corner, so spotting will be needed. After “the waterfall”, you are basically at the lake.
Overall, this trail is moderately technical, but very beautiful.
Now for some pictures: (note: it is hard to get pictures while on the hard obstacles when also spotting)
