Mark your calendars for May 13-14-15, Fri, Sat, & Sun 2005.

2nd Annual Trail Run through Chinamans Gulch on Saturday May 14, 2005. Meeting at the trailhead at 9:00 am.

It's a Camping/Wheeling Event. Bring the family. Bring the wife or girlfriend. If you're a Lady wheeler, bring you're old man. Last year was a pretty good turnout. Trail info links below.

Trail Info (http://www.mhjcontherocks.com/Community/Trips/189.aspx)

Trail Info with link for GPS coordinates (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=1)

Chinamans Gulch is located near Johnson Village, CO. South of Buena Vista. To get to the trailhead, head east out of Johnson Village, about a half mile, turn right on Road 301, you'll see a sign that says "Do not stop", shortly after that sign there's a gate to the left. That's the entrance, please close gate after you go through. Follow the dirt road to the next gate & please close it after you go through. Now you're in a big parking area. That's where we'll be at 9:00am sharp the morning of May 14.

If you plan to camp, we're gonna rough it this time. No fees for camping.
From Highway 24/285, turn on forest service road 307, follow along until you see forest service road 308. Turn onto 308 & keep going about a half mile while looking on the right. When you see all the big 4x4's, that'll be us. These dirt roads are vehicle & trailer/camper friendly. I get cell service in that area. If you need to contact me, (719)330-9302. Road 307 is about 6 miles east of Johnson Village on the south side of the Highway.

If you don't want to camp there, there's a KOA Kampground just outside of Johnson Village, it's called "Buena Vista KOA".

If you don't want to camp at all, there are quite a few motels in Buena Vista & Johnson Village. Several folks did that last year.

Friday the 13th (uh oh) at night around 8:00 pm, we'll have the campfire going & beverages there for a "Get aquainted" meet that evening.

Saturday after the trail run, we'll have a BBQ at the camping site. I'll have a couple grills going so bring what you wanna throw on 'em. Then we'll get the campfire going & toss back a few (if you so desire) & share the days war stories & battlescars.

This event is not limited to Ford vehicles. It's for anyone with any 4x4 that enjoys wheeling. If you don't wanna run your truck through there, you can bring an ATV if you have one. If you air down for the trail, in Johnson Village at the Gunsmoke Truckstop, there is a REAL air compressor. It costs 25 cents & I've aired up my 38" Swampers from 12 psi to 35 psi in less than 4 minutes with it for a quarter.......It works great. They have that compressor specifically for wheelers & truckers. So don't worry about having to refill your tires........It's all good.

If you're not into the wheeling part but want to camp for the weekend anyway, there's an outfit in Johnson Village that runs white water rafting tours on the Arkansas River. There's also Mt. Princeton Hot Springs about 16 miles away.

Hope to see a lot of folks there. :D

Assuming someone has an open passenger seat, I can go... but I won't be wheeling it in my truck. As far as camping goes, thats a good idea... I will remember an airbed this time!

Do you think I'll be able to make it if I can't get my lockers working by then? I haven't been wheeling in a while and would love to go. I am a novice when it comes to hardcore wheeling like some of the above pics, but as long as I get some help, I'm in.

I'll help ya out no problem. I do a lot of spotting & rock stacking........That's part of the fun!! Lockers are not absolutely needed but are helpful for this trail. Lots of open diff rigs have done this trail, they just have to work a little more in a couple places than a locked rig.

I'll second that Larry, we're all going to have a good time, and if the need arises I have a winch. Last year everyone made it through with only one vehicle needing a u-joint. This run is a blast and a good trail to get some experience on......

I found this video on my neighbors Jeep website--
NOTE, this is the hard line up and over the obstacle, from what I've read, the other side is much easier.
Thought it would spark some enthusiasm:

That's the middle of Whale Rock, the "difficult" part. To his left about 6 feet is the "extreme" part. To his right about 15 feet (you can't see it in the video) is the easy part. I always go up the difficult part where that XJ was going. It's a blast. I'll never try the extreme part as it is straight up..........Well, maybe I will if you guys razz me enough I might "try" but I won't guarantee success.

I have a video of me & a couple others going up it but it's a "avi" file & I can't seem to make it work for online for some reason. I'm not computer saavy at all.

I have to ask..........Is It May Yet???

The Raptor would make it through on it's own but might suffer undercarriage damage. Personally, I wouldn't chance it if it were mine unless I had some taller tires I could put on it. A couple years ago, my friend took his Blaster through there & banged up the rear axle & sprocket pretty good........of course he rode it like a maniac so that didn't help it any. Does it have skid plates?

But.........where we are camping at has a lot of places to ride. Last time I camped in this spot, when I wasn't running the gulch, I was on my dirt bike riding those trails.

Well, I know theres still a while before the trip, but my truck is having major issues. It's pulling all these codes and my gas milage has gone to crap, so I might not be able to make this one since I don't really have the time or money to work on it. It took almost a full tank of gas to go from Ft. Collins to Boulder and back, and since gas prices are getting higher everyday, theres no way I'd be able to afford to go. I'll keep you guys updated though.

Hey guys, newbie here. Found your website through Warrlord. Very cool. I didn't know there were so many Ranger based vehicles running around Colorado.
I'm planning on making it to Chinaman's this year. I need to replace my rear axle, but I should get that done the week before I head out.
I'm going from a detroit locked 8.8 to a ARB locked 9" since I drive the truck everyday. I got tired of burning down tires because of the detroit, plus I would like to step upto 31 spline shafts and larger brakes in the rear.

Warrlord
04-14-2005, 07:19 PM
Yup, the KOA does have free camping that weekend. We camped there last year for this same event. You can't have more than 2 vehicles at a site at a time (even though we had more) :)

Most of the people last year wanted to camp on FS land for the next one instead of KOA. On FS land (not a pay site), you can have as many people & vehicles as you want without having the campground personnel asking you to remove vehicles & adjust the number of people at one campsite. That kinda takes the fun out of a group event.

Anyone who wants to, can sure camp at the KOA. There might be some folks that are gonna stay at a motel in Buena Vista but the majority of folks want to camp on FS land. This place we're gonna be camping at...........I've camped there several times before & there's plenty of room & then some. Rino, it's not at the trailhead, it's about 5-6 miles down the highway.

In the next couple weeks, I'll make a dedicated thread for directions. The directions will be detailed.

:D I'm ready to go already :D

As, I quote myself, because I'm brilliant and only worship myself. I may make it after all. My dad is trying to get his flight schedule changed for that weekend so he can be home. If I make it, it will be a hit and run. I will probably come down early Saturday, and head back that evening. I'll have a definite answer by Wednesday this week.

Yep I will be out there close to 8 am on Friday ( I am so ready for a vacation even if it is just 2 days) but I will be at carnage canyon playing around. If soem of you guys wantto meet in town for dinner that night I am game. There is a cheap restaraunt that a couple of us went to for breakfast last year and it was good stuff, grungy kinda place but good food. I will be doing that since I hate cooking breakfast but I would like to see what they have for other courses.

Matt, what we did last year was meet and greet at the KOA with some food and chat around the fire Friday night with the trail run saturday morning followed by more food and chat. If Carnage canyon has a crowd on Saturday it is fun to watch those guys brounce off of boulders and a couple of hours can be killed easily. I will be heading back early Sunday due to work.

So larry, when do we get directions to the campsite? I might swing out there in the morning and set up my tent and some reserved for RMFTC signs

Wow, you'll be there way before I will. I don't plan leaving until 10:00 am.

I just made a thread with directions.

Going into town Friday night would be cool but I think I'll stay at the campsite to meet everyone coming in that evening so they won't have to guess "Is this the place?"

If anyone has extra lawn/camping chairs.........can you please bring them? :)

OK Stupid question, but will my Buick make it to the camping site? Just curious if I should take that or the truck, since I won't be wheeling regardless...
will someone for sure have a passenger seat available for me? I can be a decent photographer/spotter when needed... LOL.

Yes, the Buick will make it to the campsite no problem.

Sorry, I won't have a seat...........unless you kick my wife & daughter out of the truck

Even though you're not gonna wheel your truck, you ought to bring it anyway to "Show It Off". After all................It IS the RMFTC Truck :D

Going into town Friday night would be cool but I think I'll stay at the campsite to meet everyone coming in that evening so they won't have to guess "Is this the place?"

If anyone has extra lawn/camping chairs.........can you please bring them? :)

Less than two weeks now :bounce:
I can spray paint RMFTC on the side of Naomi and leave her at the campsite if you want to go to town  I'm not exactly worried about paint right now

On Saturday, I was out riding my dirt bike at China Wall near Tarryall & ran across the XTerra club. I talked to one of the club leaders (I think his name was Allen?, not too sure) I talked to him about the run at Chinamans on 5/14 & he said they weren't planning on hitting the trail until around 11 or noon that day & that there would only be about 4 of them anyway. Real nice guy, I explained to him about our run & that we're gonna have at least 15 vehicles so the goings might be a little slow on our part. So out of courtesy, If his group ends up behind us at some point we'd let his group pass if it's safe & feasible to do so.

We didn't see where there would be a problem on the trail. If we meet up, we'll figure it out then we agreed.

yeah I've talked with the leader of the xterra club a few times (not in regards to this trail run). Hell of a nice guy.

I am with Jeff on this right now. I will be there, but still not sure what I'm driving or when I'll be coming down. I know I can't get out of work on Friday so if I get there Friday it will be fairly late, after I drop the dog off at my folks, etc.
Also kind of nervous about leaving the truck at the campsite for extended amounts of time, out in the middle of nowhere. I know, I'm anal.

I'll have the campfire going Friday night when most everyone shows up.

In all the years I've camped, we never had anyone mess with anything of ours when we've left the campsite for hours & hours. I know there's a first time for everything but hopefully not this time. :)

well, things are looking good. I finished installing the 9" today. I still have to change oil, spark plugs, and something else, and add tow points to my new(er) front bumper and pack, but I think I should make it with no problems. I will probably take off thursday morning and work my way out west. I haven't quite decided what I will do during the day on friday, but I will meet up with you guys at the camp in the evening.

here are some pics from today...

Bloodbane, thanks for the offer... might take you up on it. Might not have the option though, my truck might be at the body shop at that point... we'll see, I'll be there either way.
Any idea when you plan on leaving the campsite?

Also... does anyone have a passenger seat available? I heard a few "maybes" but not too sure...

Matt- I don't know if you got my email a while ago, but my dad is going for sure, so I won't have a front seat. You are welcome to ride in the back, but that would be no fun at all for ya.

Holy cow, I went skiing today, and it was FREAKIN COLD!!!!!! It was snowing like mad too! I was expercting it to be relatively warm, considering it is MAY, but goodness.
I really hope it's not freezing cold and snowing out in Buena Vista.

Yeah, good eye. I used to have a detroit, but this truck is my only mode of transportation, so I needed something more streetable. Those ARB are expensive. Some places were charging $850 for them. Plus you have to get the right one because there are 4 different versions that have been made.

I don't know if I will be coming or not. I probably won't know until later this week. I've been dealing with some personal issues for the past couple weeks and I don't know if I'll be up for this trip. I'll have to see how I'm doing when the time comes.

Hey all, I am new to this site but I have been following the trail thread over on explorer4x4.com... I am pretty sure Warrlord knows that I am in for this (as long as you don't mind a token sport Trac for the trail). I am seemingly the least modified of you all but I am looking forward to getting some good experience. I will have at least one buddy with me and we will be up to camp on Fri evening at the camp with you guys (as long as there's room and you're cool with it__) Looking forward to it. Hopefully 32's and a l/s rear will be ok for the trail... I don't have my sliders yet.

FYI, I created an album in our photo gallery where everyone can put pictures of the chinamans run, rather then having them in their private album, etc. You can access it by going ot the default location: http://www.rmftc.com/gallery/
It SHOULD show as a link at the top but currently theres no images in it. You would upload the file the same way you normally would, but select "Chinamans Gulch" as the album to upload to.

Me and two buddies will be up there at the campground kinda late on Fri... around 11 pm or so (we'll be quiet though if it looks like most are asleep :) Hopefully there will be room for us and a tent. Only bringing my explorer but should I be worried about the full-size and damage comments?? Looking forward to it. Later.

There will be plenty of room for you two & a tent. You won't get any damage going to the campsite (if that's what you meant), 307 is a decent road. 308 might have a couple potholes though but nothing major.

I made it back after a slow drive home. That spare tire is way out of balance. I tried to follow Larry when he left the truck stop, back to the campground since I did not know where it was, but when I got on Hwy 285, I could not get up past 50mph. The truck was shaking all over the highway, and I quickly lost Larry.

Anyways, today was great. Not a bad days work, blowing a tire, knocking off the driver side step, and rock rash on two different spots on the rear passenger side.

You guys were amazing helping me out today.

Jeff, I'm sorry for your problems, but man what a meet that was! You should've called my cell phone I could've told you how to get to the campground... but thats ok. Hopefully those new tires came with some sort of a warranty? Glad you had a full-sized spare thats for sure, as no one else would've had one that would've worked with the bolt pattern. You did awesome on the trail, and I hope you realize what a feat it was getting a full-size F-150 through that trail, it definately wasn't designed for it. You did excellent, that trail was very challenging. Hopefully the damage didn't upset you much.
To everyone else, it was a great run and thanks for letting me attend even though I showed up in my Buick :). I got lots of good pcitures, will have to get them posted soon.

The damage is minor and I'm not worried about it. I've got a good sponsor, you may have heard of them, Wells Fargo. Now I look back at the trip I took out to Grand Junction in January to pick up this old spare tire from Leanintree, as a well justified trip.

Yeah I know!! Boy my plans just keep expanding. For now I am going to save the lift $$ (ie the SUperlift IFS lift) and work on alternatives... I'll wait till I waste my front end a bit then maybe look at a Solid axle over the next 2-3 years  For the time being I am working on design of the sliders I need made then maybe some lift springs in the back to get me a bit more off the ground.

Yeah I keep trying to get my wife to go but she is not particularly keen on it yet... I'm working on it though :D
