....should not be allowed to own, or work on, old trucks. I bought my Bronco about a year ago and have started to do some work on it here and there as money allows. The previous owner, I have found, has messed this thing up royally! The only color of wire he knew how to buy was red, so my fuse panel is full of nothing but red wires. I had to pull the fuel tank the other day. My sending unit was bad and it hasnt been running right, so I thought maybe the pick-up tube was clogged. Well the tanks has never been out of the truck (20+ years of rust on the bolts), and I find a sending unit out of an '87 in the tank. So this tells me that whoever dumped the EFI 302 for a carb 302 never did it fully. Plus the inline electric fuel pump is hooked up to a constant power, not a switched power, so you have to shut it off to turn the truck off. The wiring harness is a total disaster, etc, etc. Ok I'll stop ranting now. Just needed to get a little off my chest.

sounds like many broncos from that era that people have bought after someone else tried to fix wiring issues on their own, etc. such fun! :)
I remember when I bourhgt my old explorer and started working on it one of my first projects was to wire in lights, and part of that was spent troubleshooting other wiring in the vehicle. It had had a car phone in it at one point (yes back when car phones were the thing...) and whoever had wired it in had taken about 100 feet worth of various size and color wires, rolled them up all into a not-very tight ball, and zip tied it up above the gas pedals. Not nearly as much fun as you are having, but still a project :). The alarm that was in it also appeared to be a self-install.

I'm a fan of wiring myself and have seen many hack jobs. The funniest was from my own stupidity.
One Rockford HD 1000 amp, one Punch 18 inch woofer in a custom box and a late night install back before I knew exactly what I was doing. I had gotten everything I had needed (At great expense, I might add, from crappy auto sound) for the install except one thing. Somehow we forgot the speaker wire.
Noooo problem, I thought. I got some speaker wire around here somewhere. Yeah, here it is, its like 24 gauge, but it'll work until I get some bigger wire.
Did you know that burning wire sheilding creates A LOT of smoke? Two stupid 16 year old kids didn't... until they took to the streets to start "bumpin" the new system and thought they had set the car on fire and were bailing out of the car screaming like a couple of idiots. The thermal protection on the amp never kicked in to shut it down. (a problem I had with it the whole time I owned it. The fan would kick on but it would turn itself into a space heater before it would shut down.)
Fuses? what fuses? the salesman didn't say anything about fuses! :)
Luckily, the amp and sub made it through without damage, but we did have to stick our heads out the window on the ride home to get away from the nasty burning plastic smell.

I suck at wiring and diagnosis of wiring issues thats why the 69 has not had brake lights for yrs and the dashlights in the 77 dont work. My mind just doesnt work that way. I kind of expect wiring issues when I buy something that used though.

Some other people are smart enough to know they are over their heads. They give up when they hear the shop rate.

I've scored some good deals that way. :)

Update...sooner than expected, my new parts arrived from LMC! Shitty thing is, I'm at work and I work a 24 hr shift. Guess its gonna be a long night tomorrow. Hopefully I will have Cobra up and runnin soon! Then I can do some trail runs! Who needs working turn signals anyways, right?

OH...and hopefully I will try to get some pictures of the work, and the scabbed together wiring while I'm at it.

I personally hate electircal work but for some odd ball reason find it intriguing and just can't help but jump in to it, decided this time on the '
57 to just buy a wiring kit instead of doing the whole thing from scratch.
Good luck on your projsect!

That's what I need to do to both of my old Fords: just pony up the dough and buy all new wiring harnesses.

Mine has an entire new harness. I did everything including solder in the new harness through the bulkhead connectors where the OE bulkheads were. I am down to the rear tail lamps, and some interior stuff like the power window motor on passenger side and the turn signals from the column. I love doing that stuff. Nothing feels better than making a perfect solder.

I bought a 75' Bronco. One of the first major projects was a wiring kit. The stock one had been hacked into so many times it was useless. I bought a Centech kit, which I regret. A week later Painless came out with a kit for the Bronco. Damnit any way!

I dont know about the Centech, I wont use a painless (as painless as it sounds) My last one I used Affordable street rods looms and power panel, my next one will more than likely be a Haywire system.
