View Full Version : Low-budget Texas Hold-em night

Our last poker night kinda got shot out because of lack of interest, but I figured maybe if we made it just a night of fun, not necessarily to win or loose a ton of money or anything, maybe more people would show up.
What I thought of doing is a tournament style game, with a $5 buy-in, where everyone gets like $1000 worth of chips and then we have a 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place prize. Any interest?

I'm definately interested in any type of card game event. If I'm available, I'd be there!

I like the $5 price tag. If it's a night I can make it, I'm in for sure.

Hmmm... I may have to have Dom sit and teach me how to play. I have this great satisfaction in not knowing how to do something for very long and still kicking some male butt!!!

So whats everyone doing Friday January 14th? Figure it'd be good to try to nail down a date or time. We can do it the 15th, 16th, the following weekend, etc. whenever just want to start tossing around ideas.

MMPC

I can go for any of those times, Matt. Let's just not invite Amy or she'll kick our asses again IN FRONT OF EVERYONE!

I know Dom and I have a friend coming in from Miami that weekend. So I'd say that won't be good for us...

I'll check with the boss, and see what her calendar says for work etc... If she's home, I'm pretty sure I could get out for a few hours.

i am in if it is in the springs. but i am only 17 ok with yall? :?

mattadams
01-03-2005, 07:28 PM
The only way we can have it in the Springs is if someone offers there place in teh Springs, LOL.
As far as being 17... well I won't tell if you won't. We are already illegally gambling, not like they'll check ID's LOL.

UrbanCowboy
01-03-2005, 11:45 PM
I believe gambling among friends is legal. Anyway, when are we going to schedule this?

mattadams
01-04-2005, 07:00 PM
The poker table should be delivered sometime in a week or so, and its got seating for 8 :).
Thanks Chris for "sharing" the table with me... :)

Either one should work for me.

as long as I don't open the next day I should be fine with either one. (unless new management has me working nights)

I'm gonna have to back out of this, poker night, I'll explain reasons in another post.

I have a jewelry show on the 22nd with my best friend, so I guess either I can't go, or we'll have to do a different day.

How does January 29th or 30th work for folks? That way hopefully some more folks can show up, but it won't be Super Bowl weekend either.

Here's some "official" rules about how the game will be played.
Texas-Hold em, no limit betting.
$5 buy-in.
Playing tournament style, which means each $5 buy-in will receive $1000 worth of chips to bet with. (white are $5, red's $10, blues $25, and blacks $100). There will be no cash-outs, so if you have to leave or something, your out of luck. Depending on how many players we have, will either do a 1st/2nd place or 1st-3rd place prizes. If we do a 1st/2nd place the pot will be split 60/40, if we do 1st-3rd places the pot will be split 60/30/10. What this means is, say we have 8 people, that each chip in $5. 1st place will leave with about $25 either way.
If more then 8 people come will end up doing two seperate tables, and as people are eliminated the tables will be combined. If playing multi-table, different prize options can be considered (for example, 1st-4th place, or the last two people at the table split the pot, etc.)
Start with $5/10 blinds (if you aren't familiar with how blinds work, you may want to go online and do some reading, or we will go over it the day of the tournament). Blinds will go up occasionally, as determined by a consensus of players.
There will be no re-buy'ins so once you are out of chips, you are out of the tournament. Use your chips wisely.

mattadams
01-12-2005, 02:34 PM
ok lets shoot for Saturday the 29th at 5:00pm. 5:00 might sound a little earlier, but last week Chris and I played in a tourny where we started at 5 and wrapped up around 11 that night.

MMPC
01-12-2005, 02:36 PM
Unfortunately the 29th will not work for me as I'll be out of town. The 28th or 30th could work, however, but I know most people would rather not play on a Sunday night...

mattadams
01-12-2005, 02:41 PM
OK, lets shoot for Friday the 28th then LOL. I guess we need to know who can come each day to decide what day will brign the most players...

Tray
01-12-2005, 02:44 PM
Well, I can't come the 28th for sure, and I'm questionable for the 29th, so don't plan anything around me.

If you have it, and if I can make it, I'll be there.

UrbanCowboy
01-12-2005, 02:56 PM
I agree on getting participation. I can do the 28th or 29th. I can do the 30th but I don't get off work in Boulder until 5pm.

How about that Sunday, the 30th.
We will probably be doing it at my place, unless someone else volunteers. I live at 8000 W Crestline Ave. #1416 in Denver, which is right by Southwest Plaza, near Wadsworth and Bowles.

01-20-2005, 09:46 AM
oh yeah, duh!
My address is 8000 W Crestline Ave, Apt. 1416
Littleton, CO 80123

To get there (depends where your coming from) you would take Wadsworth to Crestline, which is a few blocks north of Bowles, and a few blocks south of Belleview. Head easte on Crestline, towards the Petco. Directly after the jiffy lube, and right before the home depot, take a right, which will take you to my apartment complex, which is Westlake Greens. You will see the leasing office, take a right where it forks and the first building you will see is building 14 (my building) . There are two "halls", the north entrance and south entrance. Just go ahead and walk into the south entrance and my apartment is in that hallway.

Thanks to those that showed, we had a great group of folks. Ken who is visitng from New Jersey, took home the "grand prize" of $27, and Greenmonsters wife took home $18. Those that didn't win, still had lots of fun (hopefully) :).
