Where is the filter (in the stock location) getting the cold air from?

That sure is less expensive than buying a prefabbed kit for sure. Not to put a damper on it at all but that is no longer a "cold air intake". It will use the available air in the engine compartment. When the engine is warmed up to operating temp, that air in the engine compartment will be what is going through that air filter, making it a "hot air intake".

The factory air filter box is actually a cold air intake. The reason being, the little snorkel or tube draws its air from the grill in front of the radiator or it draws it from the fender well outside of the engine compartment making the air it intakes, cooler than the air in the engine compartment. The cooler the air, the denser it is. Meaning, more air (by volume) gets into the combustion chamber resulting in better performance than having hot air entering the combustion chamber.

Now please don't take this wrong, I mean nothing derogatory by it. I'm just explaining the difference between hot air intakes & cold air intakes. The main reason people go to this setup is because they've been told (mostly by K&N & other manufacturers) that the factory air box is restrictive. On some vehicles they are, some they aren't. You gotta go with what you want

agreed, it is a "hot" air intake, it is in the stock location. Have another 7.3 with the air raid kit for $200+ and the only difference is a shroud around it that is supposed to keep hot air out. But for the price I cant beat it.

Good idea for the money, another point behind the after market cold air system is the main air tube is smooth which cuts down the turbulence that is in the factory tubes, the black rubber tube going from the throttle body out to the MAF sensor.

Would be neat to hook up a scanner to the computer and check the difference in air flow from stock filter set up to what you have done here.

Agreed with scanner. My other diesel is an 01 and all the expensive kit did was replace the stock box. Also found out that I have an early 99 stroker and I guess their is only two companies that make a air kit for my truck and both are over $200. It sounds and feels alot better than the stock box. I am hoping to get better MPG at least, that is if I can keep my foot out of it lol
