View Full Version : Any close trails?
Been thinking my girls would like a little wheeling trip, but everywhere I know of is a bit far for two young kids. Just trying to find something a little more doable.

Saxon Mountain is only about a 30 minute drive :).
30 Minutes?
I guess my flux capacitor is slipping a little, as it usually takes me an hour and a half.

ok I'm exagerating a bit... I think the last time I went up there it took me maybe an hour once I left city limits to get to Georgetown, not too bad as far as trails go. Unfortunately I dont know of anything good that is closer. Theres some good trails around central city and st. marys glacier that are fun to play around with, but there just about as far away.
Oh well, I guess we'll either try going up to Boulder, or possibly stop in Georgetown to 'refresh' them and their sitting ability.
the trails behind central city arent to bad and you can see the st marys glacier.

you might be hard pressed to hit a trailhead in 30 min or less, but the following books make for good regional look-ups:
4wd Adventures : Colorado
Colorado Backroads & 4wd Trails vols 1 & 2
The first is a great book, complete w/ maps, detailed trail descriptions, and a dose of Colorado history. The other 2 volume set are much more general and nowhere near as accurate.
I'd have to agree that the St. Mary's/Apex trail is nice, close, and fun.. as is the perennial fav, Saxon Mtn.
Slaughterhouse up near Bailey's not bad either. Check out 4x4trails.net.

My "local" favorite is Bill Moore Lake out of Empire. It's about the same distance as Saxon Mt., 35 min if riding with me or an hour for about everyone else.
I've never been to Bill Moore Lake. How tough of a trail is it?

Bill Moore I think by some classifications as listed as a difficult, 4x4trails.net (another good site to check out) lists it as an 8 of 10, but its nowhere near that hard. We did it last summer and the stock F-150's and stock Superduty all did it with no problems... except Heath broke something on the trail but thats cause he was messing around.

I would give it a 4 out of 10 if you stick to the main trail.
went up to central city this weekend its pretty dry, i found snow but no mud.bring on bill moore lake
Well, I'm going to have to get out there to see what Bill Moore has in store for me.

There is a pretty fun trail down by me called Dakan Road. It is a county road that has rocks, mud, and views.
