Does anyone know a good place to get some engine work done? i just need my blocked bored .030 over, and a set of heads rebuilt. Its a Ford 400 V8, And just the typical 2v Heads.

How much are you looking to spend? Usually when a block is bored, its also tanked, which means that new cam bearings and freeze plugs HAVE to be installed also. The last shop i talked to gave me these prices (for a 400 ill be building soon)

Bore and hone x 8 = 96
Hot tank, install cam bearings and freeze plugs = 35
Master rebuild kit (no pistons, stock cam) = approx 300
Resize rods and press fit pistons = 80
Step up to aftermarket cam = add 35-80

The figuring out of what i would want to buy on my own follows...

Tmeyer inc Pistons 9.5:1 CR with 76 cc head Hypereutectic .020 over part number TMI-KB2347-20= 243+shipping
ARP rod bolts,part number ARP 154-6001 set of 16 = 59.95
ARP main bolt kit part number ARP 154-5004 = 32.95
Milodon aluminum standard volume water pump part number MIL 16335= 62.95 (or Napa water pump WP58213 for 27.99)
Intake Gaskets, Fel-Pro 1240 = 21.95
Exh. gaskets (headers) Fel Pro 1430 = 21.95
Motor mounts (napa BK6021193 and BK6021194 = 14.69 & 13.49
Flex plate (stock) approx 50
Oil and filter 81815 (carquest) 1515 (napa gold) 6.29
Case of oil = approx 40
Coolant = approx 45
Thermostat (napa THM197) 6.59
Spark plugs (autolite 25's) approx 13
Engine Paint approx 25-30

Hope this helps.

I did not get a price on rebuilding heads, multi angle valve job, new valves, new valve springs, magnaflux etc.

Most stock pistons come with rings, but the t-meyer ones dont, so add 50-150 depending on the piston rings you want to run. If you want to run a "better" oil pump or timing chain / sprockets, add 35-135. Pedistal mount roller rockers?? Add $243 (scorpion 1024). Grind and polish crank, chamfer, dont know how much to add, but its not expensive. Torque and align bore mains? Dont know how much to add, but its worth it for added engine life. Deck block? Dont know how much, but easy way to bump up CR and assure proper head mating surface.

out of curiosity are you building one of there 434's? and thank you this really did help, and sounds a lot cheaper than i was anticipating. i've thought about the 434 a few times, but i have a 460 i am going to build for it, so i just want a solid 400 with mild upgrades to give it that lil but extra, so i can shove it in my bronco when the 77 gets the 460.

i actually just replaced the lifters and cam, about 5 hours before the rod bearing spun, so i have my rv cam hehe just need the block rebuilt.

Im skeptical of their 434's.... I wouldnt build one with the kit he sells. Not that i dont like the ides of a stroked 400, but its being talked about as a 'street' engine and not a good race engine.

The machine shop i was talking to is in denver, I just thought the TMI pistons would work alot better for me than some stocker pistons.

oh ok, see i am on the same page as you when it comes with the kits. i am thinking about making the switch to the Austrian Cleveland heads thou. Or maybe a port and polish on the stock ones. alright, well i guess i'll start callin around an see what prices i come up with, i am in the denver area, do you know of any who do good work?
p.s. thanks for the input, most people i talk to just say a 429/460 an to forget the 400.

I would recommend Blue Oval Performance over in Englewood but me and a buddy are having a hell of a time getting a hold of him these days. He is fixing my FE that Spit Fire off I-76 and Federal screwed up.. Blue Oval has had my motor since April.. I don't really have any recommendations for anyone in the Denver area. Good luck!
I have kicked around the idea of building a 400 as I have been really impressed with mine for putting a baby cam in it but we shall see.

Well that is good to know that you were impressed with one, i only had about 6000 miles on my motor after the time i bought it. and then lost a transmission pump, in the middle of a run on slaughterhouse. Needless to say it was a rather expensive recovery for my friend to come get me. And after the new transmission i lost a lifter. fixed that and then lost this rod bearing. And the only 4x4 it saw was half of slaughterhouse ran backwards, it was doing well, but wasn't able to give the motor a good test to see how it would proform.

I thought blue oval went out of business after one of the sons "Matt" ( I believe) died. I used to know the Dad, but forgot his name now  they used to have a kick ass ford powered big block dragster, and are well known at bandimere. Damn what was his name...

He may have reopened back up after time. I just remembered his name Wayne Hemmert, He is a great guy, knows his Fords well. I talked to him and his sons often in thep its at Bandi several times. When his son passed on, I didnt see them anymore. someone else I know up there told me what happened. it was perty sad

What does Wayne look like?

The Blue Oval Ryan mentioned is owned/run by Rob McQuarie. I'm sorry I recommended him. Another FE guy I know had his heads re-worked by Rob, no mention of any problems.

looks a bit like myself, Brown hair, and glasses, I think he is probably pushing his mid to late 40s by now. Maybe he sold his shop to this rob guy? like I said I thought he shut down. dont know, why are you sorry you recomended him? If he does good work then you shouldnt be sorry. good machine shops are hard to find these days. I am VERY leary of using many.

Head gaskets, t-stat and gasket, intake gasket set, exhaust gasket set ( all fel pro except for t-stat and t-stat gasket, those are napa) = $94

Heads cleaned, magnafluxed, milled, new hardened seats installed, 3 angle valve grind, new valve guides, pushrods, and heads assembly = $286

My engine builder turns 75 on Saturday!!! IM thinking of taking him a card when i go to pick the heads up tomorrow!

I googled your guy, not the Wayne I conversed with here in Golden.

As for The shop called "Blue Oval", Rob has been in business for some time.

I guess there was more than one shop named "Blue Oval ____"???

Anyway, it is disheartening to hear of poor service from an otherwise well known and trusted shop. Rob's reputation is built on quality workmanship. I hope he gets ahead of whatever problems are hindering his production.

Hey Mike, who said Rob did poor service?

Wayne is well known up at Bandimere. That's how I know him. He had a big program going on way back when. I dont know about the other one. If I remember right Waynes was known as TSC Blue Oval performance center (TSC was for The Service center) I am not sure if I am remembering that correctly. It's been a good ten years since I have even seen him.

I guess I said that. Maybe it's normal for a shop to ingnore it's customers, not answer the phone, not return calls, not get work completed for months on end. At least a guy could get a hello, goodbye, or F-O now and again.

BTW, my opinion is based on what Ryan has told me of his experience, after my telling him to take his engine to Rob.

Mike, the email address you have/gave me for Rob @ Blue Oval is no good now. I emailed him about a week ago and still no response but my buddy had a different email address from him as well (which is the last one that did not get bounced back). The last time I talked to him was in the middle of August (I just checked) and he said he was "finishing" up my heads and everything should be done in a week or two.. The bottom end assembly that you gave me is at Blue Oval now as that is the same friend that I gave it to. He has been trying to get a hold of him for a month now and he never returns phone calls or answers the phone. My buddy just wants to go down and get his stuff now and doesn't even want him working on it. I am getting to that point as well. I am afraid I am going to loose my motor and I am already sitting in this damn FE for $4500, not to mention I got A LOT of good parts in that motor. I think I am going to have to get off early one afternoon and make a trip down there. I call him and I get the same thing.
