Detroit vs. Lock Rite. Try to figure out which would be better to run. I understand Detroit is the entire differential while Lock Rite is just the locker. Detroit comes with a hefty price tag and requires professional installation if you are the average Joe. On the other hand Lock Rite is a lot cheaper and can be installed by... well me. However I have seen a couple disclaimers not recommending Lock Rite as far as horsepower and big tires, just doesn't say how much. I'm planning on running them in Dana 44's and a ( in. so i won't be going crazy on the horsepower or tires. Any recommendations / advice?

I run the Lock-Rights in my Explorer(F/R) and the front of my Ranger(both have 35's and I have the 347 in the Ranger). I haven't had any complaints from them yet. I'm not heavy footed either though. Main problem with them is not the units themselves but the stock carriers usually give up on you.

Hmmm. Saw a Detroit somebody is selling for $300 for my Dana 44, don't think I can pass that up. However that still leaves three more axles I want lockers in. I figure on putting Detroits in the Bronco since it takes more abuse and has more power, then Lock Rights in the Jeep. Problem is the cost of Detroits to put them in the Bronco. I have to buy the ring and pinion and everything else and put it together all at once. I was thinking with the Jeep I could throw the lockers in then come back and do the gears when $$ allows. If I'm correct Lock Right isn't gear ratio sensitive, unlike the Detroit.

Although I have seen many loc-rites in various rigs, the bottom line is that they are only as strong as a stock carrier.

If you manage the skinny pedal well, you can get by with a Loc-Rite, if not, you better be buying Detroit.

Your right on the Lock-Rights not being ratio/gear sensitive. Just pull the spiders(stock) out and install the Lock-Rights. The instructions say to check everything, but it shouldn't have changed.

Check out the Aussie locker if your really looking at the lockright. I've heard better reports on them, no tire restriction size and from what I've seen they are just better made. Downfall is you still use the stock carrier so thats your weak point.
Detroits are proven to be excellent but you'll pay more and have to do a full set-up

No tire size limit on the Aussie Locker. It still isn't a detroit, but they do not have a tire size limit. Even the lockright can handle a bigger tire but they will not warranty it if it fails. Aussie doesn't make this exception with their warranty. I wouldn't recommend anything over 35's with either of them and if your running on D44's your probably not going that rought anyway. Detroits are definately more predictable and reliable but when your on a budget the aussie is a great choice.

Maybe? I'm not questioning you at all but I was looking into them last month until I decided on the detroit. That was one of the questions I E-mailed to the aussie techs and they told me there wasn't a tire size limitation. I haven't personally seen the paperwork but I am very diligent in searching out and reviewing products before I buy and I couldn't find anything bad about the Aussie. And there are quite a few guys running them with 35's and even bigger.

Got the Detroit today for $300, slightly used. The guy threw in parts for another one he blew out. Has a buggy crawler and just kept breaking Dana 44's and other 1/2 ton axles so he stripped it down and I got the locker. Problem was the axle housing was out of a Chevy and I couldn't use it. I may look into the Aussie just to see what they say. I'm pretty set on Detroits in the Bronco and Lock-Rights or something along those lines in the Jeep.

Aussie has yet to fail me... (btw, on 35's) Aussie will warranty there locker with any tire size, and any hp, as long as it is setup correctly...not saying that this would be my first choice if I was running 49's with 900hp but it has held up with a 302ci under the hood and 35's under the fenders...

Looks like this is going towards a great locker debate. I'm putting my word in for Detroit. Although I'm still going to run Lock-Rights in my lighter rig, I prefer the Detroits when it comes to the Bronco with more power and larger tires. I plan on running both in two different rigs and when I do I can truly voice my opinion.

Guess I should snap a few photos and write something up when I throw the Lock-Rights in. It's still a Dana 44 so it may be useful to somebody.
