Name Randy
Location Colorado Springs
Occupation Plumber
Member since? whenever it was that Matt got fed up with FTW and started this place. about 04 i guess it was.
A Scout? you ask.
well this Scout is more Ford than IH.
I've got a mildly built 460 out of a 71 Lincoln, Ford 205 t-case, 10.25 Sterling rear and a HP Ford 60 in front.
i had a C-6 but i wanted to go stick and couldn't find a suitable ZF so i went with a NV 4500 out of a dodge.
I'm right in the middle of a major do over.
four link in back, three link in front, air bag suspension, and a bunch of other changes
like extending the wheel base and bobbing the bed..
got it Matt.
OK here we go.
this is at the Binder roundup last year in Salida. those guys don't like me because of all the Ford in my Scout.
you can see it sits way to high. a pain to get in and out of and kind of tippy

this is the 460 shortly after i put it in.

this was a couple years ago at Chinamans with Larry and a couple of you guys.

the way it sits now, new fender wells to clear the 37's with the body dropped way down.

Sweet Scout. My first 4X4 was a 65 Scout. They are week in the drivetrain department. Looks like youve got it dialed in. Can't wait to see the completed pics.

Nice, I have soooo many good stories of wheeling in Scouts.
How much travel will you get with those airbags?

Can't wait to see it done. I always thought airbags are the way to go ever since I saw how well Range Rovers worked.

i picked up some steel rims for bead locks $10 a piece. a few SOS pads and a little black paint does wonders.
GLO beadlock kit should be here by the end of the week.

How about some pics of that new front axle?

How much did the bead lock set cost you? And how hard was it all to put together?

the axle is still pretty rough. I'll get some when it's a little farther along. I splurged on a digi camera a few weeks ago, so there will be pics-a-plenty now.

Man, these bead locks have really tested my patience.
when i ordered them from GLO they said they were in stock and would be shipped the next day.. well two weeks later no bead locks so i called and they said they where having problems getting material.(yeah ok.) another two weeks and still no bead locks so i called again pretty hot and they promised they shipped that day. i finally got them six weeks total after i ordered them. they are the base model no frills so it wasn't like they were special made or anything.
the worst part is the very next day after i talked to them, they had an ad on Pirate for $210 shipped. i paid $245 PLUS shipping. i called them again to bitch and they wouldn't budge on the price. they promised to give me a smoking deal on some other stuff i need. so we'll see i guess.
they were easy to install. i just cleaned up the wheels and got rid of all the paint where the rings mated up. then welded them up and ground down the mounting surface flat. i put the tires on with some bead sealer stuff i got at NAPA. no leaks so far.

Ya, I want a set, but I kind of like the Staun Internal Beadlocks.
http://www.columbiariveroff-road.com/InternalBeadLocks.htm
There official site must be down because I can't get onto it and won't display.
but it is:
http://www.staunproducts.com/
If you want to visit and see if it works for you.
They seem simpler and safer if you get a flat, they act as a run flat. But due to money problems, convetional may have to be the way for me.
But your rims do look awesome! Did a great job!

i got a little done on my rear air springs.
i had to mod my frame a little to fit then above the axle and keep a low ride hight.
http://www.rmftc.com/gallery/data/500/medium/air_bags_002.JPG
here's how they are going to sit. i made a bracket for the top and plumbed some temp lines. it only takes abot 15# of air to support the body.
http://www.rmftc.com/gallery/data/500/medium/air_bags_009.JPG
here's the bags all the way all the way dropped, no pressure.

just a couple little bugs to work out and i'll be wheeling. it's been a year and a half since i started this project, i'm ready!
slammed....

pretty impressive! Don't start using those bags to jump the vehicle though, LOL. I was at a car show when someone was doing that, and one of the airbags blew and holy crap, you'd think a nuclear explosion had gone off.

these don't fill up fast enought to do that. it takes about five seconds to go from all the way flat to all the way full.
it is fast enough to shock the hell out of some low rider going up and down at a stop light though. :D

How do the bags do as far as allowing for suspension flex? I've always been interested in this concept but never seen it in person except on the hoopties

they won't effect the flex at all untill they max out. i got the adjustable shocks so i can set them softer off road and stiffer for the street.
Nice work Randy! Maybe I'll get to make a trip where I can watch it.
i've got a couple things to work out but hopefully it'll be off road ready in a week or two.
