View Full Version : Took my heads off

I was able to remove my heads from my motor today. The head gaskets looked fine and so did the pistons.

I have one cylinder wall with a little bit of scorring. I hope to hone it down before going back together. Then on the head with the 2 low cylinders, I have 2 bad intake valves.

I will take them to a machine shop Tuesday to replace the bad valves and to make sure nothing else needs to be replaced and that the heads are not warped. If all goes well and the weather coroporates I may have the truck back together by the end of the year.

Owie! Let's hope it stays cheap Ted.

OK update time. All the valves and springs were trashed to too much heat. Bought all new Manley stainless steel valves. All new springs, retainers and seals. Hopefully the heads will be done by Tuesday. So far bill over $600 in parts.

I ordered new rings and as soon as I can I am going to pull the oil pan down and pop out each piston and replace the rings, while motor still in truck.

I will probly pull timing chain cover and check to see if the chain needs to be replaced. Then I will put every thing back together.

After the motor is running I will start working on the mods for the Top Truck Challange. Also can't wait to try out the new Challange trail at Left hand canyon.

$600 is good for having all new hardware on your heads, especially if you went with the manley ss valves and new springs, retainers, locks, etc.

Should be pretty nice keeping all of the compression in the cylinder!!!!!

Had time to work on my motor today. I crawled under the truck and pulled the oil pan.

Then I was able to remove one piston before dark.

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm320/farmerx2x/PC300323.jpg

The rings looked good and so does the bearing.

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm320/farmerx2x/PC300320.jpg
You can see how hot the piston got.

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm320/farmerx2x/PC300322.jpg

I am going to replace all the rings and hone out the cylinder walls.
The most important thing is that the crank looks good.

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm320/farmerx2x/PC300325.jpg

So hopefully the weather will hold out and I can make the time to get the bottom end done.

What do the rest look like? I was going to say check the top and ring lands for cracks. I guess I worry a lot.

Im suprised to see that it is only 2 bolt mains, I would have thought it would have been a 4 bolt set up but I've only had one big block so far.

If you look closely It does not use bolts but studs instead. Also there is a chunk of steel on top of the cap that is bolted down with it. It reinforces the cap and is a better set up than a 4 bolt main. It is a lot stronger and helps the cap handle the force of the crank.

Yesterday I was able to rering 5 of the 8 cylinders. What alot of work doing it in frame. Hope fully I will get the rest done today or on the weekend. Then I am going to check the timing chain to see if it has streached. After that I will put it all back together.

I didn't even notice that, I can only imagine the strength that gives it.

I reringed all the pistons the last 2 days. That motor got real hot I expected to see some cracked rings. Nothing, everything looked great. All the bearings are in good shape and I found nothing wrong with the rings. I cleaned all the pistons before I put them in. A few of them are discolored from heat but other than that looked great.

A tribute to high quality parts. I have seen motors not even come close to the temps this motor saw and welded them self’s together, much less drive home.

I am going to replace the timing chain, looks a little stretched. I am considering going all gear and no chain. Any thoughts? Pros? Cons?

I ordered a Ford motor sport water pump from the Ford dealer today. I can't wait to get the heads back and her all back together. I want to see if those Manley stainless Steele valves make a noticeable difference

Id stick with the chain setup instead of going to a gear drive setup.

I sent an email to one of my FTE buds, but he's a couple time zones ahead of us.

Did you have a particular set in mind Ted?

Yep Mike I sure do remember after going to the thread you posted in the email and seeing the truck!! Tell him to stay away from the gear drive! Out of a couple hundred Big Dog 460 bases racers I know ..Not a single one has tried and stayed with a Gear drive!! the Gears will cause Harmonics in the valvetrain that a good chain absorbs, I myself as like most of the guys I know bought for my FE and also for my 580" motor a Romac timing set there about $100 or so (Win I bought mine) 2 years ago..They have 9 keyway slots for good timing set-ups...the gears are Nitride hardened, its a true roller chain made in germany and is kept to real close torlerances!!

Or if he has deep pockets? I'd go with the Danny Bee Belt drive set-up! I wish I could afford one for my build, But there an extra $800 that I dont have at this time...Maybe later....But I know alot of guys on the Ford Big Block Club I belong too that run the shit out of then without any issue's...

But Hands down , as far as a chain set-up goes...you wont find a better unit than the Romac for any build !!

Take Care Mike, Tell your Bud Good Luck and Happy Trails !!

I owe, I owe...

Thanks Mike.

I am going to stay with chain and gears. I am getting close to having everything ready to go back together. I will be checking on the heads today. If they are done I will post pics.

Maybe I can do a snow run or 2 this season.

Cool! I sent Russ a link to your CORE vid from last spring. I knew he'd enjoy hearing your mill, probably more than me. LOL That's why he remembers your truck.

I hope it comes together without too much trouble.

Well I installed my new timing chain and gears, new timing chain cover and a new high volume water pump from Ford.

It’s a beautiful day so I am taking time to work on my truck.

So far I have installed the harmonic balancer and pulleys. Removed the exhaust manifolds so I can take them to the machine shop and have them resurfaced for a better fit. I have also scraped off all the old gaskets.

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm320/farmerx2x/P1310337.jpg

Right now I am taking a lunch break, then I am going to start on the rear diff. The last time I was out in the rocks I hammered the diff cover pretty good and it has been leaking gear oil. I also am going to pull off the hubs and check the rear brakes. The last time I replaced them was over 10 years ago. Think they might be due?

I should have more pics later today.

The brakes were 60% so I left them be. I did find this though.

I also installed some Moroso racing wires.

Now I just need my heads back to get it all together.

Its looking good, and coming along pretty fast for the amount of work you are doing (and how much $$$ it costs).

Know anyone who has another locker or limited slip for a dana 60 rear laying around? Im looking to get one for my truck, but its one of those things that i dont "need" unless i find someone locally who wants to sell one at a good price.

Those rear drums are pretty reasonably priced, when i did brakes on my truck i replaced both of mine and was expecting to spend a fortune. I cant remember how much they cost, but when the parts guy told me i said 'holy shit, is that all??'

Dang you did all this without pulling the engine? Is it a pain in the ass?

Brian

Yea it is. But I do not have a proper work area. The truck is way to big for the garage and my drive is more like a mountain side, not level. So the side yard is the only place I have and it is dirt. Hard to roll a engine hoist around.

I know that my oil pan comes right out with no problems so that helps alot. Other than that it is alot of up then down. Good excersize, but very time consuming.

I wouldn't mind doing something like that to mine. I just dont want to pull the engine at all!!!

Got home a little early today. So I was able to get the roller rockers installed and first adjustment done.

Also had enough time to install the intake manifold.

The weekend is supposed to be nice, so hopefully she will be running by Saturday.:)

Hunter

Well got home and worked on the truck and got it running tonight.:D

Ran it for about 30 minutes.

Gonna change out the oil this weekend and I got a new rock cover for my rear diff that I need to install and the truck will be done for now.

I will change out the 40's for the radial 38'Ss and drive it all next week.

The lease will be up soon on my wifes car and we do not plan on replacing it so the truck will be my official daily driver.

If I get to the top 10 for TTC I will start a new thread on the mods that will have to be done to compete.

Thanks for the support and reply's:thumbsup:
