View Full Version : Trying to think of creative ways to get RMFTC word out

Creative equalling low cost, snce most advertising moneys would be coming out of my pocket.
One way I was thinking was if people were nterested, we could do an adopt-a-hghway thing, perhaps coming in from the mountains or maybe somewhere, it'd take some committments, somewhat similiar to our trail adoption. but then we could get a sign put up on the interstate with the club names (still wating to get the sign put up on Saxon for our club).
I have made fliers up that I post at my college and about anywhere I can find with free advertising posters. I don't know if anyone sees them thats interested or whether its worth my time or not, but it feels like I'm doin something.
I've also thought of doing some pamphlets, like a 3-fold, with each fold being a different aspect of the club (4-wheeling, shows, online community, etc.) that I could try to get some local shops to put out for customers, etc.
As far as about anything else, I'm just trying to think of ideas. Chris is looking into some cable tv advertising rates for me. Most of it will be out of my price range though, but we will see... LOL.

What about talking to Phil Long Ford? Maybe they could tell new truck buyers about us. I don't know if a commercial would be a good idea. I know on our cable we have that local comcast channel, maybe the guy that hosts the outdoor show could go wheeling with us or come on a trail clean up. That would be a good way to get out the news about the good stuff the club does. Try posting flyers at different 4 wheel shops in the area.

Matt.... You talk to Willie B. at KBPI radio. He is a total gearhead, and has a bad ass Ford Truck.
He can surely help out, and can probably post something on the site.
www.kbpi.com
you can email him at willieb@kbpi.com
I know he is really into listeners's rides and stuff. He has a place on the site just for that. (my 70 Mustang is the first one there).

Contact fire departments & police departments, there are alot of gear heads there. Insurance agents are good business also. My wife is an agent & they have tons of contacts.

Highway clean ups are dangerous. People with meth labs often dump thier garbage on the side of highways. They have "death bags" , which are old catlitter boxes, gas cans, or garbage bags filled with deadly fumes from the manufacture process, I DO NOT ADVISE highway clean up for anyone. Talking to willie B is a good idea, we'd be up to 200 users in no time. Just dont let him pull another 'Mud fest'
-John
I don't really like the cleanup idea either. I can never read those signs as I fly by anyway, so I doubt many others can, or care to.
I don't know who this Willy guy is, but it sounds like he's associated with the radio, and I think that'd be #1. I don't know many people (other than Jeff) that don't listen to either the radio or CDs while in their vehicles. Can't do much about the CD listeners, but the radio audience sure could target quite a few people.

Yeah the highway cleanup was just an idea. Figured it might work for community service for all the felons in the group that are still working off their community service! LOL j/k.
Good idea about Willie B, I had totally forgot about him. Used to listen to him occasionally a while back. I shot him an email. We'll see what he says.
Radio and TV aren't bad ideas, except that it costs money, money which will basically have to come out of pocket, and because I'm not charging dues or anything, it all depends on how much spare cash I've got laying around, LOL.
I was trying to think of some ways to get "free" publicity (i.e. on the news, etc.) and my mind is still churning. We had talked about the trail adoption thing, but not sure if most news stations would consider that "worthy". I'll continue to spin my gears if you guys will do the same though.
I wasn't really thinking about paying for air time, but rather a casual reference by a new member, or a mention of an upcoming meet, etc... Not an official commercial.
Since I have some experience in this area, I can say there are many good things about cable TV advertising. First, the airtime can be dirt cheap (as little as $25/spot depending on network, daypart, etc.) and you can target your ad to a specific audience (Spike, FX, MTV, etc.) and/or specific show (automotive, 4x4/off-roading shows, etc.). I'd be willing to donate my time to produce a few spots; it can be something as simple as "Got a Ford Truck? Come to our site!" with the RMFTC logo/address, some graphics, music, etc. Even two 15-second spots back-to-back or spaced amongst many channels could be effective.
The only thing with going that route is you must commit to it. You can't run a few dozen spots and expect people to start banging down the doors. I've had way too many clients who think this way and become disappointed. You've got to stick with it as much as possible to build the identity of the club and get the message out there. That's not to say you need to have thousands of dollars available up front, either. I know that's Matt's concern - and it's understandable. You can put a few hundred dollars here, a few hundred there and still be effective. The nice thing about our club is that it's so specialized; so the placement of our spots could/should be specialized as well.
One other nice thing about cable is that we can test it here in the Denver Metro area, and if it's effective and/or we get more money to spend on it, we can expand to cable TV systems in New Mexico, Wyoming, Kansas, etc. - the entire Rocky Mountain Region...

Those Movie Theater slides are relatively affordable as well. At least they were when I put together my business plan 3 yrs ago.

another KBPI option.
Call Uncle Nasty (Greg Stone) on Tuesday. He does "do you a favor Tuesday"
Basically he will let you pimp what ya wanna pimp on the air for free.
Well, almost free... costs ya a Hail Nasty. :D
Yup, movie theatre slides are also a good way to go. I can get some current figures regarding that angle as well.

Okay, this is what we do....Everyone in the club gets free Windshield banners, and we all watch the news....while were watching the news, our trucks are warming up, and ready to go....Then....when we see a live report, or a " weel be going live to blah blah blah out at such and such, we haul ass down there , and park in the background. When i finally buy a banner, ittl be on the news, ill make sure to stop at every accident i see when the news media is around too, and if they interview me, its gonna be infront of my truck...which, by the way, has a redneck style painted hood now  If theres a big blizzard again this yer, some of us can go pull people out...that should get some recognition, or publicity..

You know, i was thining, and i thought:
*The environment is in the spotlight alot lately.
*The Club just recieved a cert. of appreciation from the USDA..
*A new club, recieving appreciation from the FEDERAL government, not even a year after formation...
Possible newspaper article? ( small community papers will publish almost anything to fill space)
News story? A news tip to the news, you know, community information...
Tomorrow if it is alright with you, Matt, i will call the Summit Ford Dealership, where the parts guys dad works for the county, and get info from him.
I bet the place i bought my tranny rebuild kits from will throw up some fliers...
Do you want to put some logos, and basic information somewhere, and ill try to throw together a flier? Maybe you can write a "press release" style news article, and i will submit it to the summit county newspaper, and the one here in Clear Creek? Just some good ideas, and the Cert gives us a big opportunity to get attention.

The problem with our logo always being in news stories is people might begin to associate us with murders, kidnappings, and foul weather! LOL j/k.
I'll work on getting some logos up, for right now, heres the main ones, I can get you higher resolution ones if you can benefit from them, I can also put the fonts I used for the logos out there if you want to use them in any fliers, etc.

Well I am in the process of taking out our first advertisement, in the Colorado high Trails newsletter, which is distributed to all members of the CoA4WDCI members. It's mainly jeepers etc. but I know theres Ford Truck owners in there too, and its pretty cheap, so hopefully we'll be able to reach some good members with that.

Just my .02 1/2 cents...
Local, small, newspapers: Arvada Sentinel, Golden Sentinel, etc.
College newspapers. I know for 1 that Metro has a rock crawlers club. I could hit up the club and give us some free advertising.
Here's a thought - the St. Jude's radio-thon or KYGO Christmas Crusade have people to answer the phones. I heard ALICE plug their phone volunteers on air - Maybe a thought? :?
And...as an English major, I could always *cough*volunteer*cough* to write and/or proof-read articles.

First off what Chris said about the cable advertising is totally true... Then also with the movie theaters that can be affordable too... Affordable for what you get anyway...
Another option, Matt why don't you call Buzz over at Phil Long and ask him to to talk to about doing a truck show there on Saturdays... If you can get a regular thing going over there maybe one Saturday every month or two then you could let new ford truck owners, people buying parts or getting service about the club too... That should be basically free...
mattadams
03-01-2005, 02:54 PM
I dont want to work hard at plannings omething like that, and have like 2 or 3 people show up.
And Buzz no longer works there.
And I looked into the movie theater advertising, it was well into the 4 digits, way more then I could afford.

Just an idea, dont know how it would workout...but i remember going to sporting events, and hearing announced, and seeing on the jumbotrons...."we would like to welcome blah, blah, blah club, or employees to tonights game" i think its for groups that buy group purchases of tickets...might be worth it to try to find out what it takes at different sporting venues to get that time, and recognition..

03-02-2005, 12:14 AM
Yeah Chris (MMPC) had looked into it. Problem is they all require a rather lengthly contract... no few weeks here and there, it was like 3 months minimum, and you had to run it in at least half the theaters, yada yada.

Matt I have found a good way. I put a business card on the bulletin board at the fishing store I shop at. I think if we made up some flyers and posted cards/flyers at outdoor stores and automotive stores, it might help a little bit.

Matt, I just had a brain fart and remembered another way to get the word out about RMFTC. The local library district here in Colorado Springs (Pikes Peak Library District) has a free listing area for both profit and non-profit clubs... If you'd be interested, here is a link for the form to fill out:
http://www.ppld.org/CommunityConnections/clubs/submitdata.asp
You mean advertise to 'literate' people. That would go against our nature.

I can always hand them out at Truck Fest, maybe even put a small stand ( table) up with the information to anyone interested. Also at Ford Fest and I always invite people in the colorado region from other boards to join up, I have two invites from a couple of slick owners from the far north ( longmont and surrounding areas) I am also trying to plan to sell a bunch of parts at the swap meet at bandi in april, if I can get some flyers before then, I can hand them out as well. I still havent put my Decal on my back window. I was hoping my Camel towing decal would have worn out enough that I could take it off and put the RMWTFC <-:D decal in its place instead of Dead center of the window Prob. order a banner to owhen I get a new windshield

Do we ever attend big truck events as a group?
Is there a large RMFTC banner that we can take with us when attending or hosting events?
Another idea I had was gathering some giveaways for big runs. Towstraps, stickers, etc.

Maybe we should show up with a herd of ugly trucks, pose them all flexed out on rocks and stumps that we actually carried in our trucks. Shovel some mud around instead of putting up ropes. I bet everyone would remember us for that theme. LOL

Spotter's cards!
It's cheap and easy for me to print off something like this:

Or I can keep scribbling RMFTC on miserable little scraps of paper like I did on Saturday. That also is cheap and easy...like me.
