Got a hellofa-deal on some unique black 15x8 wheels on Craigslist. They will be wrapped in 33" Mickey Thompson MTZ's.(pics to come) Replaced fuel filter. Cut out my 60/40 bench and now I have ghetto rigged bucket seats(which came out rather clean). Also doing a full tune up, and fluid changes...which reminds me, Anyone got a 4.0 auto radiator, or know where to find one? I want to upgrade the cooling system a little bit.

I've used this place (http://www.performanceradiator.com/locations.php?state=co) for my vehicles & we've always used them at work for our aftermarket radiator needs. Had to warranty a couple at work & they were great to deal with.

I got one years ago for my truck from them. Got one to fit a '97 era Explorer V8 & it bolted right into my truck.

PS warlord, I saw your truck once at a gas station on Colorado and I25, at first I thought it was a f150 because the thing is a BEAST....sweet truck

Nice stuff.

Tell me about the hiem joint steering stuff.
I included a few posts from a thread on this subject from another site.
Well basically that first pic in my second posting shows that there was a metal tab welded on to each steering knuckle by the previous owner and a large bolt run through each (which can be very bad if not done properly) so they could use heim rod ends instead of the factory ball and socket style tie rod end. He told be it was modded to run superlift steering linkage but I think thats wrong.

All of the welds look real clean and the new metal tabs are braced. But I will just change out the knuckles with the ones currently on the truck.

but what are the benefits of running a heim joint on the steering?

As I understand it, they tolerate a much larger angle. But get dirty and require replacing more often.

You don't really need a much larger angle on the steering unless you've thoroughly thrashed the steering geometry.

Most of what people do to modify their steering qualifies as mind-numbingly stupid -- steering geometry has to follow axle geometry, and modifications very often don't. Not having seen the linkage on this axle, I can't say if this does. But I don't see where heims are EVER actually necessary for anything approaching sensible angles.

Now, for extended radius arms, sure. One would get much better travel from that than from compressing a bushing.

The extra tabs on the knuckles are the right thing so that the joint is in double shear. I just wander about the way all the pieces are made.

I have been seeing some trouble with my steering links that they are somewhat flexable and after a few times wheeling I get toe in and have to align it. The weird thing is after I built this truck the same thing happened andf I thought I had bent the long link so I bought all new pieces and when I removed them and compared there was no diff between the one I thought was bent and the new one.

Prerunner builders have a "swingset" design that is similar to the Superrunner but moves the links to the pivot of the TTB. That elimanates bump steer but I have seen prices at $2400 for the steering alone.

crawlin91
10-23-2008, 11:13 AM
if you want the old knuckles theyre yours. Steering is certainly not my strong point, but I am learning. I recently ordered the extreme drop from skyjacker but am looking into the superrunner steering although Ive heard some slight modifications are needed for lifts over 4". Ive heard good and bad about both setups.

thanks....ruffstuffspecialties.com thing probably weighs 10lbs. it comes raw and I had to clean up some of the slag, metal shavings and do just a little grinding to get 2 of the bolts to fit it properly but its definately made to bounce off rocks. We are welding the perches and shock mounts on tomorrow and the 8.8 should be under the truck this weekend. Ive gotta either get a ujoint or new flange to use the 1 piece driveshaft. Its supposed to be 70 all weekend so Im hoping to have the lift and front axle on there as well. have to see how it goes. Ill post up pics as I progress.

removed the F150 blocks I had in the rear and added a set of belltech shackles. they are meant to be a lowering kit for chebbys but have the opposite effect for us elitists..that free'd up alot more flex and since I noticed a few small cuts in the rear tires from the fenders I broke out the sawzall and took a few inches out of the rear fenders.-for eyeballing them the cuts look great:thumbsup:now I need bigger meats, lol

So I finally got to work finishing the radius arm setup.
materials used 1/4 steel plate
2" 1/4 wall DOM tube
grade 8 bolts

first I cut the threaded end and what would be welded into the DOM tube then made a cut again where the 2" tube would just squeeze into the stock arm.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk144/crawlin91/1017091537.jpg

Then I fabbed up a transmission support crossmember to replace the stock one. I decided to go this route to ease in the radius arm drop mount install. (instead of relocating my e brake cable mount on the drivers side, and the passenger side framerail flares in the exact point i would have put the mount) Also I used many of the existing holes in the frame and didnt have to make more.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk144/crawlin91/1031091518.jpg
my high tech drill press, I used gear oil as cutting oil.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk144/crawlin91/1101091445.jpg
beefed the hell outta the arms, there are several peices behind that plate holding the arm in as well.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk144/crawlin91/1106091044.jpg
off to the paint booth, once again only the most high tech equipment was used
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk144/crawlin91/1106091429.jpg

At this point its all bolted up in the truck. I made washer spacers that should help lift the front up a bit. I also beefed the passenger superlift drop bracket. added some clearance to the shafts, tacked the caps and installed the eliminator spring. Just have to bolt the rest of the front end together and get it aligned.

Newer 1354 Tcases have stronger 6 gear planetaries, a better shift fork design, and will bolt onto the 1350 crawlbox. I sourced mine from a 1997 ranger E1354 case. The 4 gear planetaries would work fine, but some have had issues with them slipping out of gear, and at $23 it was an improvement worth every penny.

Yeah, an atlas would be nice, those things are badass, homemade is still cooler though....well, maybe. I'm hoping this will get me similar results on a budget. I got an old junk tank that I am going to try to get to work with my ranger pump assembly so I can make room for this thing.

Update time,
I stripped the doubler back down for final assembly, and finished the shifters on each case, the front lever has been clocked and the rear lever was removed and then cut and turned to clear the adapter plate and fit my shift linkage design. I ended up using a cut up 1350 and 1354 stock linkage welded to 3/8" rod and my old bmx bars for the shifters and bolted them to the transmission in the stock position. For the hole in the floor I made several straight cuts with my sawzall and then beat the sections of sheet metal down and around themselves so there wouldnt be a sharp edge to worry about. An '90 Aerostar speedo cable was used for the extended length needed to fit the rear case. I still need to figure out some sort of boot to seal off the cab, and make some driveshafts.
I cut down a 3" body lift to 1" with my chop saw and threw it under the cab while replacing my very worn body mounts, and then made some modifications to the floor. I cut enough out to remove the body lift completely and the doubler will still fit, I will probably leave it in till I do a few other things as I have already found the extra clearance to be very helpful.

I ditched the heavy drum assemblies 70lbs a piece, in favor of some disc brakes which weigh maybe 20lbs per side, saving about 100lbs on the rear axle alone, which is still a bear to move around. I have a short window at the end of the summer in which I hope to have the majority of the fabrication work finished and the truck back on its own weight. I will be using leafsprings all around, outboarding the front springs, and inboarding the rear, as well as moving the rear axle forward. I know its a Ford site but this rear axle came cheap!

I needed some 8 lug wheels, so I got some rusty old H1 double beadlock wheels recentered, and then spent a few days cleaning, priming and painting. It took a while but I think they turned out pretty good. I also picked up a set of 37" Military tires, these things sell for less than $100 a piece. And, after looking at the price of comparable brand new tires, it was an easy decision.

Lightweight PVC inserts were used in favor of the heavy magnesium or rubber run flats that are used on the Humvees. With a two piece rim design mounting is fairly easy. The final setup is heavy and will be the only thing about running 33"s that I will miss.

I think that both the wheels and axles should hold up to the wheeling I do. I am excited for it but, I have a to-do list a mile long before I will be able to drive it.
The 14B disc brake brackets I have are from http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/
They include mounting hardware and bolt right onto the backing plate where the drum fits.

I don't have discs or calipers yet, I am going to use 3/4 ton chevy brakes. I have seen some use Cadillac Eldorado calipers and modify the E brake to fit.

I might order from this guy: He sells kits and individual parts. and might be easier/cheaper than piecing something together

That looks like a good deal on the brake kits. Gubni used to be on the Bronco forum, don't know if he still is. Last price I saw was in '09 so might have gone up, but still easy with everything in the kit. Keep up the good work, lookin for that rig to be done soon.

Started boxing in the frame, ran a new .250"wall DOM crossmember/leaf hanger and did some plating. I have some ideas for adding more strength to the design which I will wait to add once the axle is in place for good. I got everything tacked together today and set it on its own weight...I need to move the shackle hangers a little and then I can focus on finishing the steering and brakes. I moved the axle forward quite a bit and will probably end up relocating the steering box and/or swapping it out for a Yota steering box.

Thanks for the comments. I am keeping the bed, I cut it up yesterday and got it nearly ready to weld back together. I took out nearly 15", I drilled holes and cut small strips off of the removed section to strenghten the seam and make the sheetmetal harder to burn through, It lined up very straight and I am quite surprised of the results, this is my first attempt at a sheetmetal project...more to come.

I cut the bed with a sawzall (high tpi blade) and 4.5" cut-off wheels. Cleaned everything up tacked it back together slowly, to keep warping at a minimum, (it still warped quite a bit) then hit it with some body filler, I used Evercoat, Rage-Extreme, I'd recommend it to anyone. It was easy to sand and set up quickly.
I applied three light coats of filler sanding with 80 grit in between and 100 and 220 to finish, the end result came out very smooth. The bed has other scratches and a few small dents that I did not bother taking care of. Its a wheeler, and if I destroy this box I can make a flatbed for it. Mostly, I just wanted to try my hand at working some sheetmetal.

Should bolt right in, other than the lines being on the opposite side, F250 or 350 will work. Its an 1.25" Bore compared to the .75" bore on a ranger.
