Yesterday I was helping my dad prepare for moving to Africa (he is leaving Wednesday), including moving a bunch of furniture to more accesible parts of the house and moving a bedroom set, book case and a few other things... also helped move a 800+ pound gun safe. My back was hurting before I even started to help move, but I toughed it out, figured it wouldn't be that bad. Hurt very bad last night, and woke up pretty early to find I could barely move, my back was in such terrible pain I could hardly even get out of bed.
So far today have tried a variety of OTC and prescription muscle relaxants, pain pills as well as prescription pain patches and so far, still have a hard time even getting out of bed to walk around much less go up and down stairs, etc.
I feel like I"m 90 years old. i even thought "a bed pan would be pretty sweet about now..."

Aw crap Matt! If you have insurance, use it now!!!
I've heard stories that start this way, they often end with "herniated disc". Us tall guys have to remember our height works against us.

Yeah, we will see... last night I told myself if I can't get out of bed easily I'll stay home... well it wasn't easy but I got out of bed so I figured I'd make it into work and see how long I last... so I made it into work... in pain.

Hang in there Matt, Back pain is horrible, ive had it since I was a young adult with Degenerative tissue around my discs arthritis in my neck and my ribs pop out of wack all of the time which is the usual more common problem, it feels like your spine but its the rib. My lower back used to kick my ass the point where it connected to the pelvis would shift and cause all kinds of problems, I got that taken care of for the most part. Get to a DR as soon as you can. Pain meds dont work worth a crap. Best thing to help is to relax as much as possible when your home resting

Sorry to hear about your back.
Yeah, "bed ridden" isn't really fun unless the term "really submissive swedish twins" directly follows. :)
I have problems with my back too and my advice is to get a heating pad and put it on your back, set as hot as you can stand it until the pain goes away, or at least improves. If you don't have a heating pad, you can stuff a sock with rice and sew it shut. then stuff it in another sock and put it in the microwave for 1 to 3 minutes. It'll get HOT and hold its heat for a long time.*

Yeah I was doing the heating pad yesterday with limited success. Felt ok but didn't really make it better.
I finally decided this morning to go into urgent care this morning since I dont have a doctor or anything... gave me an anti-inflammatory shot, some anti-inflammatory meds as well as muscle relaxers and pain killers. Said if it doesn't clear up in a few days to either find a doctor to schedule it, or go into ER to get some x-rays, but since there was no trauma that cause it just figured it was just severe spasm's and possibly a pinched nerve causing my leg pain. Gave me some sleeping tips to alleviate the pressure on the nerve.

WTF Matt... Why didn't Urgent Care take an X-Ray??? Don't tell me they don't have one... We've only got 3K people in my tiny ass town here and our Community Care (Urgent Care Equivelant) has a freakin X-Ray machine...
Oh yeah, Jeff, if you go to the doc ask about siatica... If thats what it is, its a bitch... Sounds like what you described though...

They had one, I guess the doctor felt it likely wasn't anything skeletal an dif it was muscular or something with the discs, they would need a cat scan rather then an x-ray anyway. She said if the pain doesn't go away after taking the relaxants, anti-inflammatories then to come back in for more thourough tests. I appreciate her trying to save me money, my health insurance sucks! It's better then no health insurance, but not by a whole lot...
Anyways, still hurting today, but not as bad as yesterday, which wasn't as bad as the day before. It comes and goes. One minute I'll get out of a chair with minimal effort and pain and a few minutes later get up from another chair and have to lean on something, great deal of pain etc.

is it your back? you said leg. the reason i ask is, if it starts right about kidney height and goes down through your groin and toward your knee on the inside of your leg thats probably your sciatic nerve.
it sucks bad, i had that a few years ago.
no amount of pain killers would touch it. i ended up getting deep tissue massage that was the only thing that helped.

The pain is definately in my back, but occasionally get a sharp pain in my right leg as well. Not sure if it is associated with or not but they both started around the same time. Yeah I remember Heath bitching about his siatica from time to time. I figured it was just an excuse to get out of work, or to invent new swear words when he dropped the cooler!
Damn man! Hope you feel better soon. I've also had my share of back pain over the years and it sucks. You never realize just how much you use your back on a given day until it's giving you pain...
LOL at the Heath-Cooler episode. I'll never forget it... :D

I know Heath is pretty slow but I'm pretty sure that he could get into the house, beat you up and be out of the house by hte time the cops were even dispatched :). Would have to get past Tonka of course...

Exactly. That's why I sleep soundly at night. Nothing's getting past Tonka...

Tonka likes me... I have two big ass maglights and whopty doo about the security system... Doesn't stop the truck from coming in the front door... Unless you have so super force field that I don't know about!!!

Don't worry about Heath. If he tries to jump out of the truck too fast, he'll pinch his siatic nerve and be down for the count before the alarm system goes off. :)
As for the massage, I would say give it a try... But you have to remember to ask for the "special massage" in a subtle way or she'll think your a cop and kick you out. :)

Ohhh, one of my favorite things as part of my physical therapy for siatica was the electro shock stuff... They put little electro doohickers on your back and ass and send some electricity through there... That helped relieve pain quite a bit I thought...

How the back doing? Best of luck with it I know how bad those back troubles are.
Yeah, Matt, how's the back now?

It was just that after you asked them to attach the electrodes to your junk that they asked you to leave and never come back...

Still in pretty good amounts of pain, it comes and goes. Sometimes I feel almost no pain and sometimes I can hardly stand. It doesn't just vary by the day but practically by the minute.

I've had spasms like that for years .I broke three ribs when I was 17 and still have a gap between them and My spine so no support there for about 1.5inches along My spine .A really good massage therapists can show You how to relax the spasming muscle .I taught My wife how to do it for Me .saves Me a little money on therapy ( Im so Cheep LOL) Those electrodes work problem is they dont really make them in a portable model and so they are never around when You need them also they require You to lay down and relax.cant really do that on the trail or in a meeting or standing on a ladder .

You know I do billing for a pain specialist... if you want Dr. Shell to take a look give Brooke or Maureen a call and tell them I referred you. I don't think the wait list is too long. He sees all kinds of back pain stuff from work, auto accidents, old age. :)
