View Full Version : What's with all the social networking crap...?
OK, I realize I might be slipping into my "Old Gramps Grumpy Pants" here, but my new iPhone software allows the (legal) downloading of all sorts of applications. Browsing Apple's "App Store," and seeing over 30 (!!!) social networking applications, I've come to wonder - what's with this trend? You've got Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Limbo, ShoZu, and on and on. Do we really need to be that connected to our friends/family so that they have to know what we're doing every minute of the day?
It all seems a little bit narcissistic too. Do I really think I'm that important that someone needs to see when I'm eating, riding my bike, working, watching TV, blah, blah, blah? The new 3G iPhone (no, I haven't upgraded...yet) even allows you to SEE where your friends are - assuming they also have a GPS capable device. I guess if you're trying to avoid someone... :p
So - fess up - is anyone here addicted to these services? And if so, what do you use them for - are you just checking in with people or are you obsessed with their lives and hoping they're obsessed with yours?

*raises hand* I admit, I am on MySpace.
My brother's on it as are many of my close friends who I don't get to see on a daily or even weekly basis, mainly because of distance and such. It's fun, but it's definitely an addiction. One I'm going to break here in the next few weeks what with the new job and all :)
Crackbook...er...Facebook...eh, it's weird. As to the others, never heard of 'em

I specifically avoid them. I don't want to be that accessible and the way I figure it, if I fell out of touch with a long lost friend from highschool I must of broken off contact for a reason, so theres probably no point of trying to re-connect with them anyway. Plus I think the idea of complete strangers and ex friends being able to look you up, sometimes anonymously is kinda creepy.

I am on myspace, I dont have a i phone or even a cell phone, lol but I do like myspace my friends from far away as well as family in oregon, plus when I hear a good band on HARDATTACK!!! I look them up and add them to myspace friends list as a band. also the pinup girls, hot rodders, I have members from other car clubs and truck clubs etc etc. just something to do when im bored. nobody knows what I am up too on a daily basis. I guess thats what kids do these days. Remember when we were kids? we had to have a 20 foot phone cord and were lucky to have a phone in our bedrooms for pirvacy so we could talk to our friends, lol My mom liked the long phone cord so she could throw it at me and my brother when she was yacking away on it and we were tormenting her :D
I have been wanting to get a I pod or is it actually MP3 player? I would like to have somem usic when im at work sanding away, cant hear my job radio when the machines are running and headphones would be great. Anyone have any recomendations? I looked at the ones online at walmart, the regular I pod for 40 bucks, its a tiny lil feller, with the arm band would make for a good setup. but I dont know if its mo bedda or another brand.
suggestions anyone? anyone? anyone?
oh here is myspace, add me if ya want, loks of heavy metal, rockabilly, psycobilly, etc etc etc cute pinup gals

There are other decent brands of MP3 players, but if you want to be compatible and use what about 90% of everyone else is using, get an iPod. The little one - the Shuffle - kicks ass; it's only $50 for 1GB of storage. If you don't need a display to see what artist is playing, watch videos, etc., it's a very cost effective solution.
And I guess I should add - in fairness - that I'm on both MySpace and Facebook - but don't really use them. I just setup an account to see what all the buzz is about. I still don't get it... ;)

I don't have any of em, no myspace, no blog, no nothing.
Although I guess if you think about it, a forum could easily be considered a "social networking site", though not as lame :).

ok cool, but what about being compatable? like you said, what everyone else is using? does that mean the I pod is easier to upload songs onto? the shuffle is what I wasl ooking at, at the store its 40 bucks, but online you can order the shuffle for same price and get an acessory for free, like the arm brace or whatever else they offer, so I might just do that. check out myspace, you can see what kind of stuff I did on there, and thanks

Social networking... lol, not limited to myspace and such. Look at all of the clubs that exist that people join to fit in. Movie clubs, video game clubs, book clubs, truck clubs...etc.
The computer is social networking for people who are either broke, ugly, lazy, or socially inept.... i think i fit into a few of those categories.

chess clubs too, cant forget about them, and the GYM lol thats about the most pathetic social club you will ever see. cant ever get a good workout in a GYM everyone wants to stop and BS with you. they hang around the bench not putting their weights away farting up the place with all of their goofy supplements that dont work...
what else, Drag strip is a great social club, everyone there has incredible comradery, and bowling alleys, same there Drink and bowl and drink more then yell and scream and holler because you got a strike 3 times in a row gobble gobble

IF you are good with your time managment, you can go take a pee, grab another beer, take 2 shots, and stop by the front desk to have them put the bumpers up in the same trip.

anyone bowling over 200 us usually one of the better bowlers youll find in an alley, the general averages are from 130-170, 170 being the top dogs and above that are the guys that bowl three or four times a week, once a week is average 130-150

We can set up an event invite using facebook, so people can RSVp, hopefully people can also post bulletins on the myspace, and make a short promotional video for us to post on youtube, which describes the outing. If we use the correct key words, it could also become one of the top search results on google!!!

the drunker I get, the better I bowl. Last time I think I broke 120...if that!
And... I'm on Brunswick's e-mail alerts thingy so that means I get coupons for discounts!

Yeah, pretty much the iPod owns mobile music these days. If you want the same basic device as everyone else, that's it. They also work pretty damn well, I might add. I went through years of trying out (and returning) MP3 players; they never worked how I wanted them to. I finally stopped that process several years ago when I got an iPod.
As for being easy to use/upload songs onto, iPods use iTunes - the #1 music seller in the world today. So if you want compatibility, there you go. :)

As much as I hate to admit it, I will agree with Chris. My iPod is the only Apple product I own, and it is very is easy to use with iTunes and has been trouble free for a couple of years.
