My daughter comes down for a visit Saturday, she'll be here most of the week.
I've started groveling to wheel the Heep on Sunday. All the kids are on my side. ;)
Anyone else up for a look-see?

Sounds good to me, but I have to see how James is with putting the Ex off for another weekend. I"m also suppoed to be running Yankee Hill on Saturday, but I might be able to push that off for a week or two.

Maaaaaaaaaybe! I'm on call with the weekend crew, might be able to work that out. Life is pretty busy at the moment.
KLH... I think my Landlord's son has one of those. I think I rode it: Rolling up the street at 5 MPH in 1st, pull the throttle back, watch the front tire come off the ground. Sound familiar?
You could always bring the bike up here for storage. Yeah, the landlord is a gearhead. He would keep the oil circulated for you. He would even knock down a few beers with you. Just a thought...LOL

I am, but that's dependent on James' schedule since the garage is padlocked. We pulled the engine already, so we need to get it mounted on the stand I bought, as well as yanking the rest of the stuff and getting it on the trailer for salvage.

thx 4 the pics I like, so just another quick question how far is the trail from the Aurora mall area? Mapquest gives it 60 miles. You can trim some miles off by taking Highway 58 to US-6, drive up Clear Creek Canyon to Idaho Springs. Drive fewer miles, drive half the speed, get there in the same time from Golden.

No workey-workey for me this weekend. Looks like I'm a "go."
We can meet where the most people want. It takes me 20 minutes to reach Idaho Springs through Clear Creek Canyon. The only down side is no cell service if I need to communicate with anyone.
So what place and time works for everyone else?

It's a road, I think you need regular ol' plates.
I still have the forms on my jump drive.

How about 10:00 AM at the Safeway? Is there a Starbucks there? LOL
I'm wondering if we shouldn't go up the back side. I don't see any encouraging news about the switchbacks.

Looks like a good time was had by all!
How would you rate it compared to years in the past? Was it more difficult? Anything excecptional that hte forest service needs to know about? Large quantities of trash, trail maintenance needs, etc.?
rwmorrisonjr
06-16-2008, 08:26 PM
No, the trail was in great shape, very little trash or maintenance needs. There are some places on the switchbacks where some boulders have fallen and need to be moved, and there is a washout that appears to be fresh this year that could affect the road in the future. Our sign is still up, but the holder has been nibbled at so a corner is missing, and the FS direction sign across from it has been shot at to the point where its unreadable. The main storyboard at the summit has also been shot at. Mike suggested making a sign out of heavy guage steel so that it can't be destroyed by shooting at it.

lol ricochet(more than they bargained for)
If we do cut vinyl on the sign I can probablly get it done for free or eat what little cost there would be.

Heya Larry! Can you do that thing you do? You know...with the letters?

I loaded all of my Saxon pictures into a Photobucket gallery. Having them gave me pretty good comparison.
http://s232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Saxon/
The narrow part below the senic overlook is covered with softball sized rocks now, kinda more fun that way. Maybe there was a rock slide this spring. I didn't take any new pics of it this spring, didn't recognize it running the trail backwards. Here is a pic from 9-23-07:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Saxon/Saxon_9-23025.jpg
I don't remember if the wash-out was there before, or smaller if it was. It was kind of surprising to roll up to it while driving downhill.

Even with the extra boulders here and there, the trail was still passable to full size, stock vehicles.

Not only did we run the trail backwards, but we started with Cascade Creek. It's rockier than Saxon, but I think still passable for a stock set-up. The trail was pretty much single width, twisting through the woods with just enough rocks to make you pick a line. There were a couple motorcycles that passed us, looked like they were having a ball!

The primary reason for starting on the Idaho Springs side was not knowing if the switchbacks were open. The secondary reason was to learn more of the trails. It had all the makings of a Lost Boys Run, but alas, Rich had that map service turned on.

Even after coming off the marked trail, and heading up what we thought to be the right trail, nothing looked familiar. Rich's map service acted up a few times just to make me happy. ;-)

When we reached the summit, there was a stockish looking Rover, said he came up the switchbacks. We then knew which direction we would take off the mountian. We took a little time to explore the off-shoots.
I had to admire the handiwork on the home-built cement mixer:
It used an old differential.
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Saxon/Saxon_Mtn_06-08040.jpg
An old steering gear, maybe from the same vehicle.
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Saxon/Saxon_Mtn_06-08042.jpg
Plenty of old junk.
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee120/Hypoid/Saxon/Saxon_Mtn_06-08046.jpg
Overall I had a blast:
I got off grounding...pretty much.
I was able to feel the axles "walk" again...and it felt GOOD!
I explored a new trail, got a little lost...sort of.
After a day of thinking out loud, explaining the what-to's and why-for's to keeping the shiny side up, I put my daughter behind the wheel. A safer stretch to drive, a little coaching, I got to feel her "walk" the axles down the last of the switchbacks...and it felt GOOD!
I enjoyed that as much as I enjoyed driving...maybe. I don't want to overthink the moment. It is a memory I wish to savor for as long as I'm able.
