I noticed this afternoon on my 2001 SuperCrew the "Service Engine Soon" light has decided it needs to continually stay lighted. What's weird to me ..is I cannot hear/see/feel anything 'wrong' with the truck! Runs smooth etc....
so instead of running right over to a mechanic .. I was wondering ... anyone here have a computer they can hook up to the truck and tell me what gives?
Thanks in advance
Dave

I dont have one, but if no one else pops here and has one, i might be able to find one...if you can drive it up to summit county just to have it checked...but im thinking someone has one, or knows where one is in denver there...

Dave, I have a computer I can get the codes from. Let me know when you can swing by and we can take a look, should be no big whoop.

By the way, if theres nothing wrong, try just resetting the computer (if you haven't already). Sometimes they just build in little faults so you'll take it to the dealer I think.

Thanks Matt ! I haven't tried to reset the computer yet ... is that a fairly simple process? I thought maybe you'd have to have a scangauge or something to reset ...
I'll try that first after I figure out how to do it and if it comes back we'll hook it up to your scangauge...
How was SEMA??!

To clear the codes, disconnect the battery ground for 5 or more minutes...the loss of power for over 5 mins will reset the codes. It might also run a little rough for the few minutes after reconnecting the ground wire (doesnt always happen), but it will go back to normal after a short drive, or after sitting running for a few mins.

I thought there was more to the process than simply disconnecting the ground. Oh well, wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.
I think Jeff has a scanguage as well if he'd be willing to let you use it before Matt got back from Vegas.
I'm sure if neither of those possibilities work out, I could talk the mechanic out at the airport to let me hook you up to his MODIS and check it out.

The "official" reset computer procedure is to disconnect your battery, and turn your headlights on for 15 minutes. Your headlights of course won't actually come on by the slight draw on the electrical system to engage a switch will clear the "memory" that saves from a momentary power outage, but 've found that is not necessarily the case. Disconnecting the battery should do the trick.

By the way I will be back on Saturday night, so can do it Sunday if still needed. How many miles on the truck? Could be any number of things...
Vegas is going well, but I wish I had my truck...

Mine just came on also. Almost 35,000 mile so I think it might have something to do with that.

Will that scangauge reset the service light? I have another one from HF that will not set the service light, but will read the codes 4 times, then reset the code. It was $39. Has a book with all the codes as well.

Like I said before my Service Engine Soon light came on also, so I took a trip today to Auto Zone to have them do a code reading and it came back as LARGE emmission leak. Probably something like a bad gas cap or leak in the charcoal canister system for the gas tank. It goes into the shop Fri for some warranty work.

IT's BAAAAaaaack !
I drove up to Breckenridge today for a job .. and on the way back down the service engine soon light came back on !
soooo .. Matt .. since we're going to be in the same place this weekend (toys for tots) do you mind jacking in and telling me what code comes up?
I have a feeling it's something goofy like an o2 sensor or something
Thanks !

Mine ended up being the VMV vapor management valve. Wasn't covered under warranty. Courtesy wanted $265 to repair. The valve is only $50.

So .. after Matt checked the codes and reset it .. I went home and cleaned up the air filter and 'recharged' it with some K&N oil
buttuned it all back up and 300 miles later with now service engine soon light ..
it must have beent he air filter either being dirty or letting air in around it by not being on there right ..
thanks for the help Matt !
did you get your pic of the scan gauge?
