So over the last week jesse built me some sliders...I helped but didn't have to do much...I order some slider mounts a while ago and then this past Sat. went down and picked up some steel with jesse...ended up finding some 2"x2"x24' 1/8" wall in the salvage pile so it was .50 cents/lb so steel for my sliders was a bit under $38.00. Painted them over monday/tuesday and then went back down to jesse's and welded them on... Enough talk time for pics
First day fabbing them...

Well I tried working for myself since I was between jobs, but lots of people want you to build things for no money. Once you quote them a price, you never hear from them again. It wasn't a big surprise, but if I took the plunge on a full shop I would have to up my rate from $25/hr to $60-80/hr to pay the lease and insurance etc. I had some good paying jobs in the fall, but it wasn't steady enough to pay the bills and with gas and food prices, I doubt it would get better.

That's cause your competing against them cheap-made brushguards and shit :). Someone has to really want quality, not just looks... if they want quality, they come to a place like you, they want appearance, they go to 4-wheel parts.

Funny how those same mall crawlers will pop ungodly amounts of $$$ for wheels.
Jesse is right, custom work isn't cheap no matter how you look at it. It costs money to produce before tallying up any hours.
I've done my share of freelance wrenching for people who couldn't afford shop rate. The Mrs was always lecturing me about the return. The extra $$$ got spent all the same, usually on some unforseen bill. I kept my day job for simple things like rent, food, gas, health insurance...
EDIT: NICE WORK!

Totally agree. I found out there was more money and less hassle in things like the novetly BBQ's I was building. Truck parts are harder to build, carry more liability, and have less people willing to pay for quality work.
less people willing to pay for quality work.
thats why i quit painting for people, i had a person who i charged $500.
in labor and he paid for body and paint stuff complained that i was charging to much. i took that car to bare metal and he won 11 first place trophies, bs

Damn thats a hell of a deal man I don't get peopel that are not willing to pay for quality work they obviously do not know how to do it themselves so it can't be that easy

Do you repair dents in hoods? On the CJ, which is in very good shape, I have small dent right in the middle.

I orignally ended up meeting jesse because I was going to have him build me a bumper...then after meeting he said that it would be almost usless considering if I began to wheel with him, larry etc. they both already have winches so he told me his opinion that I would be better off with a locker and some sliders...now a couple months later I have both :D He helped me change out the carriers and setup the locker and did that for free (well bought him dinner when we were done but thats the least I could do), then the sliders he did pretty much the whole things...tried to help as much as possible but still for the simple reason that he did most of it all I had to owe him something so pitched him some cash and offered anything I could....If I ever did have him build a bumper it would be treated more as a business purchase then him helping a friend out just due to the fact of shear amount of work it would consume...
Can't say it enough jesse, Thanks for everything!

That's the right attitude
There's alot of time & hard work involved in fabbing. There's alot of money involved on the fabbers part too...........welder, tube bender, assorted equipment, supplies to keep things going like, gas for the welder, wire for the welder, grinding discs, electricity used to run those high wattage consuming devices, a computer program such as CAD, etc. A person with the skills, talent, equipment, know-how, integrity, should get paid for what he does.
Back when I thought I'd want to start fabbing up some sliders & assorted other things (6 sets of sliders & one bumper, one custom bumper/trailer hitch combo), like Jesse found out, I also found out that most folks wanted it done it done for free or near free. That took the fun right out of it after working 9 hours at my regular job, then coming home, inhaling dinner in less than 5 minutes, then going out in the garage & working until midnight to 1:00am, going to sleep until the alarm goes off at 5:00am................then starting the cycle all over again. Then when the product is finished, you find out you only made about 2 dollars profit after all of the expenditures & the person that bought it was upset because he thought it was overpriced. I had absolutley no problem paying Jesse what I paid him for my front winch bumper. If he ever decides to build me a rear bumper & ups the price, I'll pay him what he asks...........I don't want him to work for free.
Bottom line..............be prepared to pay good money for custom fab work  :)

i will never fix that one, what a story
i remember when larry show jeff and i how to build sliders, it is some work and and very pricy ( welder, pipe bender, chopsaw )we were very thankful, oh jeff how's the install on those sliders coming

Which is how I approach anything with people doing work on my truck. I have people ask me all the time "you think Jesse could help me with this, or that?" and I reply with the whole aspect that it would have to be a business transaction just like if they were to take it to ORI Centennial or something to have some fab work done.
When I call Jesse to see about the sliders and so forth, I'm not intending it to be a "hey bud mind helping me with this" intent, but rather a traditional business/service transaction and conversation, setting up a time that works for the both of us, and conducting the work in a business sense.

see im more looking for someone i can trust to do good work and not screw me like paris hilton on prom night. considering every place ive ever taken either of my trucks has robbed me i'd rather take it to a person i know's garage but I agree, you have to be willing to pay for quality work esp as its not their job but an afterhours obession/hobby/idk.
*edit*
example: my bumper was falling apart soon after i got it and now its rusting out...time for a new one!
the only place i havn't been shafted was that downtown muffler place on platte and cascade, love that place!

After tonight, i have more and more respect for metal fabrication and the ammount of work that goes into it. Granted, out work was newb quality, but the amount of work that went into it is respectible for anyone.
My buddy Will has been working his tail off to get his old Blazer running again. It needed some help and he wanted protection, so myself and Eli (who came down and helped us out) took on the project of making him some rocker protection. Needless to say, I was impressed ny the amount of work we put into it and finished at around 10:30. Nothing special, just a little steel thrown together to fit the rotted rocker

It varies. Labor costs can range from $200-$800. With a bumper like Larry's, Rich's or mine, there is about $600 in labor (24 hrs) and $200 in materials.
