When hubs go bad?

I was supposed to post this last night, but I was tired. Since Cory does not have a computer at home, he asked me to post the following.

What are the indications when manual hubs are going bad?

Hmmm, I'm not sure how they would 'go-bad' per say unless perhaps the springs have lost their spring or if any of the pieces inside are broken. If it hasn't been maintained (greased etc) then it has a higher probability of being broken. I had one break once, but I discovered that when my hub self-destructed on the highway and my wheel almost fell off. Luckily I made it into Grand Junction but I was stranded there for a couple days as a donor vehicle was located so everything in my wheel well could be replaced as the damage was extensive.

When the hubs on my explorer went bad, they just started clicking real bad. Of course they were Ford's automatic hubs and were junk. I replaced them with Warns and trouble-free operation from then on out :).

the sound i get every once in a while is like it's in between gears and when i stop it go's away.

my warn hubs did the same thing.
What I did:
1. Take hubs completely off
2. Take hubs apart (think about how you do it though, or you will forget the order the parts go in)
3. Wash everything in gasoline to get all the grease out
4. Rub everything down with emory cloth to smooth everything out
5. Dry everything off, grease everything
6. Put hubs back together
7. Replace seals around hub
8. Put hubs back on and enjoy

My hubs that have gone bad in the past were always from abuse, and made loud popping sounds, and left me in situations that required a great deal of ingenuity to be on my merry way again.

all better thanks to the people down stairs, last night they woke me up with there loud ass music so at about 11:30 lastnight i started banging on my truck with a hammer.... in front of there bedroom window until midnight. i hope they get the hint before i wire up my car sterio out of the lincoln in the house "600 WATTS PUSHING FOSGATES DVC'S" very nasty. :twisted:

well bootsi i did and went to work to move those things for monday
