On the trail my 302 has never drank a ton of fuel, now getting to the trail is another story.

8 MPG from a 3.0! My FEs did better than that!

The 4.0 is what...something like a 3.49" stroke? Why go backwards with a 302/5.0 and it's 3" stroke?

How much do you think the ZJ will weigh when it's done?

what were u getting out of your fe's? the bst I have managed is 12

I've only had the Heep in the garage for a week now, so it's gettin there!

I've got a 3.0 182 in the Ranger, a 4.0L would be nice, but i'm a fan of rechid excess!

No clue on the Jeep weight, I pulled a LOW PINION Dana30 and 4 link out of the ZJ and the tin foil Dana 44 rear.

Long arm lifts get into 2500 bucks. The rad. arms from my bronco are a little under a yard and the ZJ long arms are only a few inches longer. Cheap and effective!

what were u getting out of your fe's? the bst I have managed is 12The 390 4V that came in the truck would get 10 to 12 mpg, empty, loaded, towing a tall heavy trailer. The 360 2V that's in it would get a consistent 9/10 mpg with it's doggishly low compression ratio. The axles have 3.54/3.55 gear ratios, driven through a NP 435 with it's 1:1 final output.

My old '64 T-Bird was a different kind of critter. 10:1 CR, 4V intake with tall runners, tall port heads, auto tranny and (I think) 3.0:1 gears in the axle. Around town, 9 mpg. On the highway, sight the vanishing point, bury the speedo...9 mpg.

I'll have to put together my own profile one of these days.

BTW, I really like the Heep's 4.0, especially since it's fresh and paid for and drops right in. There is no shortage of trannys for this year at the boneyard. It's not like you are trying to set a land speed record. LOL

With 4.10 gears running 35" tires, the speedometer & odometer will be inaccurate. As a result, the MPG figures will be inaccurate. With that setup, the vehicle is actually covering more ground than the speedo/odo is registering so it will seem like really crappy mileage.

As an example only, let's say you fill the tank. Then you drive 100 actual miles with your current gears & tires. Then you top off the tank & notice it took 6.1 gallons to top it off. That gives you 16.39 actual miles per gallon.

Now, after that top off of the fuel tank, you drive that same 100 actual miles but your speedo/odo only registered 76 miles. You top off the tank again & it took the same 6.1 gallons. This time it's 12.46 MPG's. This is just an example because I have no idea how far off your speedo is but you get the idea. I'd be willing to bet that you're actual MPG's are around 10-11, still sucks though. But that's because it's a small displacement V6 pushing that truck with 35" tires while it's very under geared, causing the engine to lug & work harder while your right foot is farther on the gas pedal than it needs to be to push the oversized tires with extremely increased rolling resistance down the road. If you went to 4.88's or 5.13's, you'd notice an improvement in the fuel used per mile. 5.13's would be optimum though.

I was originally going to SAS my Ranger. To hell with the IFS!
I also needed a solid daily driver with a little better fuel economy. The Ranger is going back down to 33x12.5s. I drove all over God's green earth last summer for work and managed to get about 16mpg over all. I've got the set of tires hangin around, I just have to get them mounted and balanced.

I figured in the beginning, why drop tons of cash on gears for the SLA D35 and 8.8" when they were going to be pulled pretty soon.

4.10:1 for 33s isn't too bad

I've been keeping busy.

Ranger:
I swapped in a disk/trac loc/31spline Explorer 8.8"
I ditched my stock blocks for flipped chebby drop shackles. The ride improvement is amazing. The disks stop on a dime even though I need to bleed them horribly.

ZJ:
Axles are in, suspension is set up. Now it's down to:

Trac bar, drag link, brake lines, shocks, front drive shaft, and tranny swap. (I have an 40,000 mile AW4 leaking on my garage floor right now)

I've gotta re do the front axle tho...
The lower spring pads needed to be moved in 3" on each side. Instead of grinding off the radius arm c clamp wedges and moving them over (Would have to grind the living shit out of everything) I was researching making brackets to use that actually move over the coil pads, or grinding the original pads off of the Dana30 I pulled and welding them on in place. Either way, it's gonna be a bitch. Here are some recent shots of the beasts:
