I wanted something that I could get really go wheeling with. I have never been a fan of IFS front suspension. The wife bought me the truck as a gift, and was nice for a year. but I wanted a true 4x4.

gotcha stillnot fan but I only harass for good fun I don't mean anything by it. I've thought about a cherokee a few times as a more fuel efficient alternative to the bronco

If I felt I could work one like my F-100, I'd own two XJs instead of picking up another 390 for the Ford. Our little XJ has really impressed me with very minor (Translated: Cheap) changes.
If it helps you any, I upgraded the injectors to Bosch units off a 5.0 Mustang. LOL Purrs like a kitten!
Edit: Best mileage we ever got was 21/22 MPG, then I put bigger tires on it.

"The Plan"
4.88 gears with lockers, 35's, D44 front (out of a rubi).
But to do all of this I need a 8" long arm lift and a list of goodes. So it will stay this way for awile I might throw a lock in the front just cause but we will see

I really only bought it to drive in the winter and going camping in the summer. But i think we are going to do a 4" lift with some 33's on it but I need to find out what gears I have in the Bronco.

3:55 I would bet what is the axle code on your door. 4:11's and a leveling kit are almost perfect with 33's
Tilt168
12-18-2008, 01:52 AM
4:11? whats that....4.10 is easy esp for the 8.8 just find an explorer!

Sweet...another Bronco owner. As Don said, probably 3.55's for the gearing. If you want an idea on what a leveling kit/aal and 33x12.50's look like on stock wheels, check out my build thread.

Thanks guys!!
I think if I lift it it will be a 4" lift. I had an 83 a long time ago that was the first truck I ever lifted so i know what I am in for. I am conserned on the gearing. I do not have the skills required to change them. so I would have to pay a shop to have that done. And the point of this truck was not to spend a lot of money on it. So we will see what happens this summer.

Well, first off, you can run 35's with a 4 inch lift...and some minor trimming (if any). There have been people who ran that set up with stock 3.55's, but it is not recommended. It will destroy throttle response, gas mileage, and eventually your tranny.
With that being said, I think a 4 inch and 33's (like you have planned) would be your best option. 33's and 3.55's aren't bad. I am running it now, and yes it is noticeable, but not horribly. If you buy the lift, and need some help installing it, let me know. I have a little bit of experience with suspension (very little) because I did install my leveling coils and add a leaf on mine. Plus I have been interested in learning how to do a full suspension lift, so I can eventually put a 6 inch on mine.
Also, check out FullSizeBronco.com. Its a very useful site, and you will meet a lot of great Colorado members with FSB's as well.

Having done it I would not run 33's on the bronco if it is goin to be a driver with 3:55's. i got so fed up with the lack of response out of mine its back on 31's except for wheelin. 4:11's for 33's is about perfect but if your going 4"'s 35's are probablly a better option. If you need a hand when it gets warmer give a hollar but I really have zero experience with gear setup other than some assistance on the operation one time. U may hit scott (sfu.......somethin) on this board. He owns ria grande 4x4 or something like that and seems to have reasonable prices on parts and labor.

Try running 38's on 3.55's!! You will really hate driving your truck. It was like having a geo engine in a semi. I could never get better then 7mpg either with the 5.8 until I put 4.56's in it. I still think I could use some 5.13's in my truck.
If he wants 35's I would go 4.56's so you can pull the hills easier. :twocents:

So I have traded my bronco for a F-250. Here is a pic of it. It is a 1989 with a four in lift. Also it has 285/75R16 (look tiny) So I will be going with larger tires once I figure how big I can go. I am hoping for 37's.
