god awfull lot of miles he had about 365k in 1995 when the odometer stopped counting, we drove it until 2000 when Dad bought a newer truck to go to and from work, so there is atleast 500k on him, fresh engine in 2000, Trans was rebuilt in 2006 for the first time ever. Rear needs a overhaul now pinon seal is leaking. needs new springs front and rear.
he has been rolled, jumped a few RR tracks, many times to the hills hauling a camper behind and motorcycles. I have considered a lift for him because I do need springs. but the cost is just too much right now. and the tars are only about 2 1/2 years old. new Rhino liner from Rhino liners of golden, I have a set of doors and fenders to replace the ones on it with worn out hinges, and some black epoxy primer to give it that tough truck look until I can get it painted was originally Metallic silver which was repainted over 3 times with Candy apple Red Laquer

ok ill throw up some things I have done over the past month to both the 64 and the 06
the 64 has had front fenders removed, and I cleaned up the lower cowl/fresh air vents which fresh air comes in at the Area most cars have kick panels. I had to shop vac all the dirt.twigs.leafs and whatever else got in there through the cowl itself. then sanded and painted that section, as well as the drivers fender was straightened out and primered then put back on. the passenger side is off now and getting reworked as well. I am not focusing on getting the fenders or hood perfect because I will replace them with a glass flip front from US body source ( when I win the lottery, lol )
Also, put a set of cherry bomb Glasspacks on my 2006 F150. I have been wanting to upgrade my exhaust system on it for a long time, but the tremendous cost of a kit of muffler shop has held me at bay, So I bought two cherry bombs 19 bucks a piece 29 1/2" long 2 1/2" I.D and a few clamps. I have plenty of extra pipe and misc Hardware here at home.
Now here is the Deal as to why. both driver and passenger side banks are 2 1/4" I.D piping all the way back through the catalytic converters to one single 2 1/4" pipe to a huge muffler. Thats a HUGE restriction. I feel thats one major part of not allowing the engine to work and perform at its maximum potential ( even what I did is not enough but its much better than a 50% cut in the exhaust) After test drive I think I am doing much better. didnt seem like the Truck was fighting just to get moving. I will know more when I get some Track E.T time and some more road time to know for sure. I also have a video of the exhaust but its taking a looooong time to upload ill prob put it up tomorrow

I was not really happy with the way it fitted so I stopped by his shop, He took time from his Evening to make measurements and bend the pipes for me. I will get them fitted up tomorrow hopefully. the tailpipes will come out at a 60 deg angle instead of a 90 and everything will get welded up with some nice solid mounts. If anyone needs a Cage, Exhaust or anything else mandrel bent, I would definately Recomend Hanksville Hot rods, He does do 4x4 stuff as well. there was a jeep in there last time I was down getting a exhaust system.

mike Hank didnt do anything wrong lol I didnt like the Bends I had on it. they are them pre bought ones and I couldnt get a good fit where the tailpipes turned out from the mufflers. so I went to Hanksville hot rods to get some mandrel bends made and I will swap out my old pipes for these ones. Hank bent these for me as I watched, that mandrel bender is really cool

Its no big Deal don. I dont think you could tell on the bronco because its a tighter fit with the 64 it has a small curve on each side and with the nwere bumpers that curve isnt there. either way, I have to either have it rechromed or paint it one day. if I rechrome it they will straighten it then
I was not complaining I was just mentioning it

05-14-2008, 08:41 PM
lol that was funny. almost as funny was wathing the engine dangling from a hoist as your pickup is dragging it across the dirt flinging around in the air like a ride at Elitches. :D
but I dont think thats what bent it, the thing is bent outwards as if it had a tow rope hooked to it once. in other words it needs pushed back towards the body.

If i could count that high i would help you out.. The 6 times i have had my axles out of my truck this last week i shouldda counted the splines to see if i could find one of the $700 lockers for my dana 60 lol. I re-vamped the whole brake system minus the lines, master cyl, and prop valve. Stops alot better now and the parking brake works for the first time since i have had the truck. Drums, wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware, rotors, pads, calipers etc..
shawns 64 F100
05-22-2008, 10:36 PM
why did ya take it apart so many times?
Glass
05-22-2008, 10:56 PM
The first time was to see why my brakes sucked (forgot about knowing they were shot)
2nd time was to get a measurement on the brake shoe width, they showed an option for 2.5" width and 3" width.
3rd time was to replace the drums, hardware, and shoes.
4th time was to straighten out a wheel stud that i drove in crooked.
5th time was after all of this a wheel cylinder started to leak fluid so i replaced them.
and 6th time was to double check my ass and make sure i got the bearings set to the proper torque because someone else was going to drive my truck and i didnt want shit going wrong while they were driving it.
now i am looking into my crystal ball and i see the 7th time being to count axle spline, 8th time will be to install a locker, and then who knows what the 9th and 10th times will be for...
You gonna be able to be out at the track tomorrow night? Chuckie and i will be there. He will be racing his ranger, and i will be racing my TRUCK!!
Glass
05-22-2008, 10:58 PM
Ohh hahahaha, just for future knowledeg, you may not want to go with me on the first ride after i put all new brakes on my truck. I wanted to test the brakes out and see how it panic stops, but i had a passenger. So i just told her to hold on and slammed on the brakes at about 50. Man they work good.

lol! I wish I could be up there but looks like I wont, I have a huge job that wont be finished in time to even get over that way for one, and 2 i am loading up the trailor and getting the lights working for trip to strasburg saturday to get gramps 47 home, we keept cancelling this for months and I will make it happen, good timing too with the 3 day weekend ill get a tiny bit of rest
I remember when I used to tear down Danas and would get into the habit of measuring the brakes before reassembly just so I didnt have to do it again, that gets old quick

Well I was not happy with my cheap ass exhaust on the 06, the damn pipes just didnt fit right. so I went down to Hanksville hot rods and had him mandrel bend these bad boys so I could get the satisfaction of a professional job at home. the cherry bombs are still used. the entire system now is about 240 bucks with the mufflers its straight fits perfect and doesnt have any loose or kinks, they come out the same area in front of passenger tire only at a 60 Deg angle instead of 90 which looks SOOOOOOOOO much better. now i need to find a set of tail pipes that will work, already bought some square ones, they are going back because they dont fit 2 1/2 pipe like it says

There is two changes...
:glasses10: I did some shopping for tars the past 6 months 18 inch wheels are absolutely outrageous. I even considered buying some black spokes which would still run well over 200 bucks for 4 cheapos. which would then not even make a difference from tar purchases alone. so im looking about 225 + a tar for some 33-35 inch 325 or 335/65x18 I believe hopefully the cost will drop more in the next year.

Updated my info with some photos. my 06 is gone, my 78 is going away, as well as the 50 Studebaker pickup :(. I traded my 69 Mustang for a 69 Bronco with a 3 inch lift up front (springs) and blocks in back, it needs some work but will be my daily driver, and paid for. I just got back from looking at it today, you can see where it is sitting now in the album
This Bronco will be some fun to work on. I have always wanted one and finally have one.

Ok Are we going to get anymore snow? Can anyone tell me where to go to make it stop so we can get dry? I need to get some dryness so I can get the bronco home and atleast have enough time to get it running before next winter.
Here is where he sits right now. looking at all of the stuff piled up in the back makes me want to get to work ASAP LOL

Well I brought her home last Sunday. Put a new battery in it. The starter was on the floor so I mounted that back on. Changed the oil out. put 5 bucks worth of premium in. The hosse on the filler neck is dried out and leaks when I fill so I will replace that soon. It had green painters tape sealing off the fill neck so I picked up a Gas Cap. Cranked her over for about 30 seconds and the oil pressure went up to about 45 (thank god for mechanical gauges) checked for fuel at the carb. and it was there. Pumped the throttle and she fired up instantly with no engine noises from inside. Not even a lifter tick! Oil pressure went to 80 psi! It has a slight exhaust leak at the passenger side flange at the manifold. The column shifter linkage is worn out severely and I would like to rebuild it eventually but did pick up a manual shifter for now. I have to get shocks and finish installing the extended shock mounts. I have to finish the axle assembly installation. Rear pinon angle needs set and gears need changed to match up front. I have to get the shafts made and figure out what needs repaired on the brakes. Of course the list will continue and I will stop for now. Some pics here

Don, thanks but I have plenty of shafts. I will drop them off at Front Range as soon as I have my pinion angle set and the measurements from flange to flange.
I am going to get it rolling on its own power then focus on bugs. :D
I need to learn about shocks for the lift. how to figure out what is needed etc etc. some of the ones I find for sale work for stock to 2 1/2 lift some do not...

That full floater is kind of intriuging; has it been narrowed? Is the front axle a full width?
I think it's easier to find a 9", or an 8.8 with discs...

Mike, they are both full width. I also have flares for all four corners that should cover them big feet.

shawns 64 F100
05-10-2010, 09:47 PM
nope they dont. thats something else I need to look into, I think the coils are leaning outwards because the axle mounts are full width which is why they are crooked lol. I may look into some sort of upper bracket to put them where they belong

Hmmm, can you post a picture showing from the radius arm mounts to the inner knuckles?
It would be better to relocate the mounts on the axle, if at all possible. Earlier mounts and knuckles were welded on. The later axles had the mounts and knuckles cast as an integeral component.

LOL I named him HULK I think I may be needing that hydraulic assist to turn them knuckles. Get this I took a closer look after cleaning up that front thats under it and it may not be casted on perches up front afterall. I am pondering my options still this evening. It may just be easier like you said to just swap the entire assy. over and have identical front and rears.
I cant wait to see how that lil engine does pushing them big axles around. :D

I did some poking around on the interweb, turns out the 610005 is the Dana/Spicer BOM number: It is a D-44 after all. I got all excited looking at that massive punkin with the three ribs cast on the side.
Oh well! Shawn has his knuckle swap and extra parts to boot. It is still a good score for the cash involved.

Just a Bumpdate, new pics on my gallery. The Bronco is getting its front knuckles swappped as soon as I find 2 more 16" rims. I have a good set of tires for it now and need to get that hub/spindle back to Mike. Maybe this weekend I can find some rims and swap the front end over.
the 64 will be getting new windshield and weatherstripping as soon as tax refund arrives. :D

Well the Bronco is up for sale, I have someone cpoming to look at it on Tuesday
Grumpy is going to my brother in law.
I go to pick up my new ride which is a 82 F250 in almost mint condition.
Not having a job is forcing me to sell the Bronco and having a bad valve is forcing me to get rid of grumpy sooner than planned, but atleast he will still be in the family. I am looking at changing schools for a career in aviation mechanics. So I need something in better condition to drive to and from school (and hopefully their job placement program works)
Ill probably take all of my performance parts and engine trans out of the 64 F100 and sell the truck dirt cheap. so if anyone is wanting the pickup less engine, trans and some other items, let me know before I throw it on Craigslist.

Yeah, I havent even been able to drive it on the road yet. No income to finish it and I cant just let it sit here collecting dust. Im asking 3500 obo to CCB and RMFTC members.
I brought this home tonight. 600 bucks it has a little tiny bit of rust on the bottom of the fenders. Interior looks like it was never used and just sun faded on the door panels. 81 F250 Custom cab 4x4 5.8M/6.6 The freaking AC Still works!

got a wild hair this weekend and bought a set of Valve cover gaskets out of curiosity.
took drivers side V/C off and found the exhaust valve pushrod popped out. I found it laying in there against the #6 intake pushrod. All of this time I am wondering why it is smoking so bad and using so much oil and why I lost compression, and figured it is a piston oil ring. Put it back together and cranked it over and that lifter wont pump up.
Changed the oil filter topped off the oil, checked my other fluid and went for a ride. It smoothed out and the smoke started going away. Severely confused because how in the heck does an engine not have any compression when the valves are staying closed? I think my lifter finally pumped up, going to see if the set of plugs I have here will work for it and change them.
Anyone have any idea why I have 0 psi when that valve isnt opening?

I posted in my member profile thread but am seriously confused. Maybe someone here can answer my question.
How would my engine not have compression when the valve is not opening at all?
Warrlord
09-11-2011, 05:05 PM
Intake valve opens, piston moves downward pulling in air, the needle on your gauge should register some kind of compression on that first stroke but it won't be high number on the first stroke. The exhaust valve remains closed due to the pushrod out of place so some of the air in there escapes through the intake valve opening during valve overlap (both valves open at the same time) so it has to start all over again on the intake stroke & it repeats the process on consecutive strokes & never gets enough air pulled into the cylinder to build up the compression reading like you're used to seeing. Or the exhaust valve could be burnt (not sealing).
I'm just speculating because it's possible for the compression gauge itself to be a problem or the schrader valve in the hose end could be the problem. Have you tested one of the known working cylinders?
dannan_w
09-11-2011, 05:11 PM
I will leave it to people more in the know, but are the rings ok?
Warrlord
09-11-2011, 05:53 PM
Now it makes total sense. I looked on your Facebook page. Since it's an intake valve instead of an exhaust valve not moving, I agree with that guy :D No air getting in the cylinder to be compressed.
Shawn, if your lifters are bad, I have a set that's still in the box, never used, for the old non FE V8 Fords. They're yours if you want them, They're "Competition Cams" brand.
shawns 64 F100
09-11-2011, 09:35 PM
Larry, thanks, those lifters will fit my 351/400M? Ill take them if so,the one was starting to respond but I dont think they are 100%
I think I figured it out as you explained. Bernoulli's principle or no volume of air is getting in to be compressed.
Oh I checked compression on all cylinders. I have two compression gauges just in case one doesn't seem to be working right on a particular day.
Warrlord
09-12-2011, 08:15 AM
Yup, they'll fit
#832-16 (http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp+Cams/249/832-16/10002/-1) I've had them for over 10 years but they're still new in their box. I'll never use 'em

Hey Larry, what is the possibility of new lifters damaging an old camshaft?
Warrlord
09-12-2011, 06:38 PM
Very unlikely. You can install new lifter(s) on a used cam but never install used lifter(s) on a new cam or used lifter(s) out of one engine on a used cam from a different engine.
