You can gain more articulation with the SAS whether it's a 44 or 60. At least with the SAS 44, you can purchase high strength axles at a reasonable price to beef it up over the TTB 44, so I consider that a pretty good gain.

Oh yeah and the new RMFTC windhsield banner should add at least 15 HP and some low end torque to boot right?

I agree that it is great to see you out and using what you got! You add more and build it up more over time! The D44 woupld work great if you stay with 35" tires. That was my first SAS and I sold it for $1,200 (with Ox joints, ARB and alloy axles). You could always upgrade later and sell the 44, but it would get you to most places and beat the crap out of TTB for crawlin'.

I'll let you know what happens. Cory said it's easy and as so as we clock out here at work, we're going to go pull the back ones off my Bronco this evening.

Well I'm not sure if we are talking about the same thing. Cory ripped out the plastic part on both rear wheel wells in less than five minutes. If your talking about the metal portion of the wheel well, I'm leaving mine in place.

I'm always willing to turn a wrench with most anybody when I can find the time. My buils plans are really quite mild at least compared to the '78 supercab i used to tool around in. that was before I had a family, house, and all kind of other bills.

If I go that route I already have the 44 as well as the front and rear lift. i also think I have driveshafts that will work won't really know that until I get it up. Still need to get the chevy TRE's for the steering, as well as the extended brake lines, new gears, 35's, trac bar, shocks, etc.......... I would like to find a way to do the cage first unfortunately my fab skills are non existent so I will probablly be looking at what JBG has or some such. I thought about trying to use the steering off of the '79 bronco but i really do not know how that would work.

Don...whadya get the 9" from? Do 86 normaly come with 9" or 8.8? Did you install the detroit yourself?

I want to get a locker in my rig soon...

bronc_17113
03-27-2008, 12:07 AM
I had help with the detroit but I feel pretty confident in assisting with another one as long as we have the right tools. 9" was stcok for some 86's lol I first bought an 8.8 locker then saw my bolt were on the wrong side.

So now it is opinion time first off 4:86 in the rear, 4:88's in the front going to be ok? Or do the gear ratios have to match perfect?

Are these actually bead locks ?http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT63441.aspx

If not how easy or hard would it be to put rings on one of my existing set of wheels?

I'm likeing the durabilty of an ox locker over an ARB for the front. thoughts? comments?

Looking at a simple milemarker 12k winch anybody have experience? good bad or indifferent?

What are the best/easiest steering options for someone such as myself with minimal fabrication skills?

Trac bar bracket? does someone make a prefabbed one?

Shock mounts I know the lowers off the 79 are on the axles themselves but do i pull the upper shock towers off the 79 as well?

bronc_17113
03-31-2008, 06:03 PM
So far i have a complete 79 bronco donor. So I have:
D44.
9" rear with detroit
6" skyjacker rear leafs
4" 79 rancho coils
79 radius arms

Need:
4:88 gear set for the front
4:86 gear set for the rear
Ox locker for front 3:93 and up which will replace the carrier in the front?
ox cable
superlift adjustable trac bar
shocks
7 degree c bushings
35" bfg at's
beadlocks
12k winch
Grade 8 hardware
extended brake lines

What am I missing? I read a lot of articles but I don't pick up on everything to be honest a lot of it is written over my head.

Sorry for all the questions but i don't want to do this twice or start before i have everything I know I need. And yes I do realize that things will come up that i just can not predict.

The gear ratio difference you stated will be fine & dandy.

Those wheels are the fake beadlocks like I have. I like 'em because the outer edge is very thick so it'll be dang near impossible to bend it if you smash it on a rock.

Some places make kits to install an actual beadlock on your existing wheel. It'd probably be more of pain than it's worth compared to buying actual beadlocks. However, actual beadlock wheels are not DOT approved. They can lose air daily unless you run an innertube and the bolts need retorqued after every 25-30 miles of driving.

The OX Locker probably wouldn't work for your TTB D44 unless you fab up the axle beam for the cable & bracket to mount & operate properly. If your talking about the SAS D44, I'd think it'd be a good choice..........Just a cable to worry about instead of an air compressor, air lines, & the internal seals in the diff. Either one would do it's job but it seems like there'd be less to hassle with on an OX Locker.

I'm happy with my Milemarker SE9500C. People dog on Milemarker because of how slow their best seller is................The PE8000. Well, the PE8000 would be great for Suzuki Samurai but they're not that good for anything else. Check out this comarison video (http://www.truckspring.com/winch-comparison-video_942.html), it's about 15 minutes long & the good stuff doesn't start until about halfway into it. Of course it's biased since Milemarker is doing it but all the winches endure the same testing per their rating. My 9500, pulled 5 vehicles in a row & never overheated or acted like it wanted to give up..........GMC Suburban, Toyota Pickup, Jeep Wrangler, Full Size Bronco, Jeep Cherokee. Also, my Bro's Milemarker never gave up on him & worked flawlessly. I don't have a problem with Milemarker.........getting the right model for your vehicle with any brand winch makes the difference between hating it & liking it.

Yeah that's all based on the SAS . After pricing out the ARBand all the necessary components the ox seemed to be a lil more inexpensive and durable in the long run. I decided I was going to do the SAS based on two things articualtion and body flex elimination.

I may have changed my mind again. I think the first step for me is going to be making the truck look decent again. The wife has decided that even with offers of help it just isnt going to be cost effective to have 2 broncos. Looks like I am going to be replacing a couple quarter panels and a tailgate which I will scalp off of that truck, then it is on to painting using this roller method I have seen that looks pretty cool. Found a rear bumper today made by a local guy in Boulder that just does an awesome job at a reasonable price. After that I think it will be regear, ttb lift, winch, and a detroit true trac up front. I am still going to keep my SAS components but I am just not sure that there are enough advantages for me without moving to 1 ton axles (which I am not prepared to do just yet)

you know I always liked a solid front axle, but lately I have been wondering why a TTB cant be made better, its been a great system but as always the factory never made it perfect. I always felt one of the biggest problems was the pivot bushing and the surrounding region was never strong enough, thats why the bushing wore out so much. I always imagined someone in the aftermarket field with the correct equipment could make a sealed bearing and reinforce the crossmember where it mounts for better longevity with more articulation on a bearing over a bushing. the initial cost to make a product like that would have to be extremely expensive and thats why people switch to a completely different front end. now imagine a pivot bearing, radius arm bearings, and then maybe something for the ball joints. like knuckle with pivots where the upper and lower ball joints are located. but the system will have to have some sort of stability controll so its not wobbling all over the place, but can give you plenty of movement. Say with a couple ofl ink arms that only allow the joints to move when needed this could eliminate the off camber / caster you get with the factory system. just ideas that I come up with when I have too much coffee :D I can go on and on and on and on and on and on and on.

I still think that an SAS is the way to go I just do not think that the gains are worth as much with a 44 as a 60. The other sides is that with gas it just isnt cost effective to do an sas for as lil as I seem to be making it out.

Shawn you should check out the things that the broncospeed guys do over on fullsizebronco.com sometime. It is pretty impressive how much they reinforce the ttb as well as the travel they get out of teh axle.

Over the years I have seen many different TTB setups in desert racing. Even one that had links to replace the TTB body to keep camber correct.

You are talking about a Johnny Joint for the bushing. Jesse and I have talked some about this. He thinks you could just weld one in. The radius arms being short is also a bushing wearer. I am going to do a few things to improve the TTB to get more travel and less flex, stay tuned.

At this point my thought is that I have a locker and gears so to go to a SAS I would be buying them again so I will see what the TTB will do. Also steering is a issue. I have some thoughts of how to help that too.

Here's the adapter I have for ya......................

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplayPopup?storeId=10001&catalogId=10002&productId=743746&langId=-1&showValue=3

Hey Don after we talked, here's the two gaskets you'll need..................

http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr-Gasket/720/54/10002/-1?parentProductId=743797

http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr-Gasket/720/56A/10002/-1?parentProductId=743797

You'll also need one of these for the throttle cable.............

http://www.jegs.com/i/Edelbrock/350/8012/10002/-1

Generally, Checkers & Autozone carry these. Checkers usually has more of the performance type stuff on hand than the zone does. The only thing we'll have to get once we get ready to install it, is bolts for that adapter.

Plans for the summer include sanding the truck down and painting it right, replacing the wheel wells, new tires, maybe getting the 4:11s installed, finally installing the leafs I have had here since i bought the truck, and figuring out how the hell to fix the passenger side wiper. Today I was feeling the need to do something small so I installed these lights:
