Yesterday I was on C-470 and there was an F-350 passing everyone in sight. I was moving at a pretty good pace, but this guy was hauling ass. I noticed every time he stepped on the gas, tons of black smoke poured out of his exhaust. It was a lot more than the average diesel. What would cause this?

Too much smoke means he has his foot into the pedal to hard causing too rich of a mixture. My buddy's Dodge does the same thing, he has aftermarket exhaust and a EDGE box and he said it smokes more. The EDGE box tricks the computer into something else.

If i remember correctly, lots of black smoke from a diesel = shit tons of power....lost of white / grey smoke means somethings wrong....That guy must have had that thing tuned up pretty good....reminds my of when i saw a pure white dodge with one side of his bed completly black from exhaust...the guy couldnt keep his foot off the accelerator pedal ( i was gonna say gas pedal...but...)

There is never too much smoke with a diesel. My 300SD would smoke a bunch when stepped on, and it ran like I couldn't believe. And...did 30 MPG for a long time.. I finally adjusted the aneroid (?) to get the smoke down to almost non existant. Worked great, less power, but still 30 MPG.

My truck blows a fair amount of black smoke on the 80 hp setting with the EDGE. I bet it'll dump alot more on the 100. Basically, the black smoke means it is getting alot of fuel like was previously mentioned.

That is one of the key factors I have always used in recognizing a diesel from other engines; the black smoke. I just figured that all diesels did this since all the diesels I have seen produce the "black smoke". I like that touch though. :D
