I know Chris had talked about doing a backpacking trip this past summer, and I remember saying something smart ass about the idea. But I did some reading and found that there are some great places to trout fish in Rocky Mountain National Forest. If anyone was interested I'd like to know because I would like to start planning it around Christmas time, and maybe take the trip in early to mid summer, definatly after the melt off. Like I said it is just an idea, but it is something that I would like to do and include others if possible. Hell who knows I may not smoke that weekend! ha probably not! Just let me know.

Yes I am definately interested. Chris is tstill talking about it actually. Its getting too cold now, but something for next summer would be awesome. I havent fished in years but I'd be up for a new challenge! :)
Well, I have no clue how the work situation is going to be then, but if there's any way I can fit it in, I'm game. It's been a while since I've been out, but I'm sure all the gear is still fine just needs a little dusting off.

If you want to look up some info you can go to www.rockymountainnationalpark.com If we can get enough people to go and we find that everyone needs the same things, I maybe able to get a discount at one store.

Only thing I need is to make sure I can still tie flies. It's been a while, since all I've done the past couple of years is with live bait, or marshmallows when I'm with my daughter.

I haven't backpacked in decades. I don't even know if I still have a pack. Since it is a long way off yet, I can plan for it.

Tray I found a store that has flies for .75, but I would still like to learn how to tie flies.
Dom
Wow, .75 is pretty cheap. Well worth it for the time it takes to do it yourself, but making your own is fun sometimes as well.

Still haven't heard anything from Chris about the topic, and he's the one who originally brought it up??
Dom
Well, maybe since he decided to scale back on the whole SUV thing, he felt he needed to scale back on the postings as well?
Very, very funny Tray. :? I knew my ears were burning for some reason! :D I'm sorry guys - I don't know how I missed this post! Anyway, the idea of a backpack trip rocks - I even still have leftover bear and bug spray...
Dom - Rocky Mountain NP is a great place to go. I've hiked there in the past and there are some great uncrowded trails if you know where to look.
Just a reminder for everyone - if you don't have the gear and don't want to buy it, REI rents everything from tents to packs to canoes at a reasonable rate. You also get a discount if you're a member (which is free to sign up).
As for time, a Spring or early Summer trip sounds great to me... :)
Hey Chris what is in Bear spray? I've never even heard of the stuff.

Its kind of like mace... when a bear is coming, you spray yourself in the face and hope you can focus on the pain from the bear spray enough that you wont feel the bear ripping into your flesh.
That's cute Matt - no, really...
Many people make fun of me for having it, but they'll all be kissing my ass the day we encounter a big bear on the trail and it saves us from becoming bear-bits.
Here's what I have: http://www.counterassault.com/Bear_Deterrent/chartcounter_assault_bear_deterrent.html
I thought I read somewhere that you just pose like this, and it was supposed to scare them away.

ROFLMAO
Yes, that is the "bear, bear, go away!" pose. Patented by Matt Adams. It causes the bear to laugh, allowing potential victims to sneak away...

Yes, someday I'll have to try that while Chris is fumbling with his bear spray LOL.
I've always said, i dont have to be the fastest runner, I just have to be faster then SOMEONE LOL.

One of my professor's told us to carry a .22 for bears. Don't shoot the bear, shoot your friend in the leg and run like hell.

There's a story in todays Denver Post about a hunter that was attacked by a griz just north of Jackson Hole. Got him before he could raise his rifle. Also Chris, when I became an REI member a few years back it cost $15.00.

Yeah, you're right. I think it's actually $20 now - but it's a lifetime membership. Thanks for clarifying...
Raising rifle - 2.8 seconds
Matt Adams' "Bear, Bear, Go Away" pose - 1.4 seconds
I know which one I'd choose.
How long does it take to get the bear spray out of the Nalgiene bottle?

.45 in a holster. Even if he gets a hold of me it will be the last thing he ever does. And I'll have a nice rug to boot.
