Can a 2wd Expedition make it with NO damage?
RevT Hey Rev, is your Mrs skeered of heights?
I took a little pre-trip to scout some SUV terrain, took Virginia Canyon Road to Russell Gulch. From there my bud and I drove around for an hour looking for Ray Smith Road. It seems the only signs there say "no trespassing". A local came down the road and asked WHO we were looking for. I asked about this Ray Smith Road, he pointed us up "the easy way". It wasn't bad, we were in two wheel drive, in a SUV.
Did I mention the "no trespassing" signs? We drove past one house with several of these signs and padlocked gate. The road wound around the back where we saw a row of constantine wire (http://www.alamofence.com/p969.htm) on top of the fence. It may have been my imagination, but I think I heard the strains of "Dueling Banjos" about then. Every fork in the road had another "no trespassing" sign. We kept moving, wound up back on Virginia Canyon Road, started over, but stayed on Russell Gulch Road until it turned into two tracks going up the hillside.
We topped a ridge above town, my bud had a signal on his cell phone. He decided to try the map feature. It gave him an address, with the little red star showing in a blank screen. "You are here": good to know!
We drove around some more, found some other roads that had FS numbers. Why don't they put those on the maps I saw on-line? We finally found a sign with words, took one I thought looked promising. Like most of the roads we tried that day, the one that said Yankee narrowed to two tracks, off camber, on a steep hillside. I had my bud spot once, but we forgot about the camera. That track led us to Hamlin Gulch road, which led us to Fall River Road. From there we went up to see Loch Lomond, it was awesome! The little Heep did good with the sway bar un-pinned.
Rev, I think we won't try taking you that way. We will print off some maps as well. LOL
