If you were going to buy a pickup, with the intention of using it 10% of the time for off road, and the other on road, would you consider a 5 spOD first, or? Just curious. I don't do the rock climbing thing, but this old 92 Eploder with it's 5SPDOD is doing good for me. I may get a pickup, crew cab type with a short bed. Not sure yet. Thanks for any help.

Personal opinion of mine, if you are getting something exclusivly for off roading, and maybe some tretcherous winter driving, get something with manual locking hubs and manual transfer case shifter. Ive seen a few of the push button systems not lock in 4x4 after someone got stuck because most of them require further movement to fully engage the 4x4. What kind of truck are you thinking?

A new 150, with manual hubs, 5SPOD, and a few other toys. I have a 92 Expolder now, all manual, it just seems to work.

Sounds like s good truck...what motor are you thinking, or what comes in the newer trucks, i severly lack in knowledge of newer vehicles....Any way to get them to put a PSD in a 150? I think most the newer vehicles have the switch or button to turn the OD off too, but if it doesnt, youll deffinently want that for pulling some of the grades of the highways here and to keep your tranny from searchin and shiftin too much on you.

I did a lot of wheelin in my explorer and an auto tranny came in handy more often then I think a stick shift would've. Got into a lot of hairy sputs where finessing the gas was hairy enough without having to finesse the clutch.

If you are thinking of an 04+ 150 there is no decision as they are not offered with the manual tranny. Go with the manual locking hubs. Too bad they don't offer hubs like the SD that are selectable between auto & manual.
