View Full Version : Howsabout a tour for the grocery-getters?

Just a nice drive in the high country, something a Michigan Exploder might survive.

I was thinking of taking Kingston Peak (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=14) over the hill to Rollins Pass East (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=19), which would put us at Jenny Creek (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=17)for the slightly modified urban wheelers. The lakes at the top of Rollins Pass are stocked, there are usually campers there, and (I think) charcol grills. There is an abandoned mine at the first lake, the Needles eye is in hiking distance from where the road ends. Last year I took a shortcut DOWN Jenny Creek in our stock XJ. I'd like to see it in the daylight, dents are possible.

If you want a day in the high country, but don't feel brave enough to go out with the rock-humpers, this could be a fun trip. If Rollins Pass wasn't so beautiful at the top the drive would be boring. What I like about this destination is that there are a few choices for activities, and paved roads out of the valley.

For dates I was thinking July 22nd, 28th or 29th.

Grocery-getters unite!

I've never been over Kingston Peak. Looking at the Trail Damage write-up, it looks like a mountain road. I have been up Rollins Pass East and it is a mountain road. Even a Subaru can make it up there:
http://www.rmftc.com/gallery/data/533/Subaru.JPG

Jenny Creek does get narrow, like driving in a tunnel at times. Throw in some off-camber obstacles and a full-size may have a close encounter of the tree kind. But what the hell do I know? I'm driving my wife's car!

I live about 8 miles from Rollins Pass. I have taken our Subaru up Rollins pass about 30 times. No damage, just go-slow.

However if you take the Kingston Peak trail via Apex Road, I was just up there last week and there are some large rocks coming down that you have to either pull out of the way or roll off the side. Taking this trail slow is key with a non-off road vehicle.

Once you make your turn off to Kingston peak from Elk Park Service road this is where you have to take it easy. Once you pass the reclamation area “which is a big opening with two large mud puddles” it gets very rocky and narrow.

If this was being done on a Monday or Tuesday I would go if not have a safe trip and watch out for the 3pm Thunderstorms.

Of couse if you plan on driving up to Kingston Peak, I would not advise this in a non 4x4 vehicle this year do to the large amount of rocks that came down durning run off this year.

FWIW, given POLiSH's input, I'm considering options to the Kingston Peak leg of the trip; something that RevT can bring the whole family on. Jenny Creek should provide a little entertainment for the people who have 4 wheel drive, and it ends at Yankee Doodle lake.

Nice Topo POLiSH! Not like I'm a map expert or anything (I'm not), but the free stuf on the web leaves much to be desired. I think I'll be driving around the area Sunday afternoon, get a concept of how much time we'd need for different routes.

Seriously though, if you're still trying to sell the sploder, you don't want to drive it on Jenny Creek. Body damage is not a strong selling point.

If nothing else, maybe you can meet up with someone who is going and ride with them. At this point I don't think I have a seat open, but I'm taking it for granted that both twins and their buddy want to go.

That's your call to make Tony, but you just stated the reason for organizing a selection of easier trails to run. FWIW my wife's Cherokee made it down Jenny Creek in stock trim (tired springs and 235s): http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=100531

This year I have a 2" budget Boost, the same old 235s, and removed/disconnected the sway bars. I have a tank skid now as well. I'm feeling pretty confident based on what I saw last year.

Just walked in the door, at a quarter till 1. No problems, just got carried away exploring the area around Jenny Creek.

Larry, Mark and I determined we HAVE to run this run with you and anyone else that want's to go, Tony you were also requested in the list of have to's to run this one. It was a riot! We started the day, after I passed my radiator problems onto Jeff (sorry man, I didn't know it was contageous, blame cory, he gave the problems to me after CORE), we did some exploring on some of the roads up over Central City. Ended up running Yankee Hill on accident, wasn't a bad mistake, infact it was a great run. The rain came in after Cory and Jeff turned around and stuck with us for the better part of Yankee Hill, which made it that much cooler experience. After we completed that, we headed up to Rollinsville to where we hit the Moffat Tunnel road leading to Jenny Creek. It had been raining up there as well so there were puddles everywhere... this is where Mark and I started competing for who could make the biggest splash... Mark won. Ran Jenny Creek, had a riot, its a narrow trail, lots of fun obsticles, and a blast. The first things said when we got done were "Larry HAS to do this one!!!" Afterwords, we went up to Needle Eye Tunnel, hiked up to the tunnel, good half mile hike one way, hung out there for a while, then headed into town for dinner. On the way back into Denver, Mark got pulled over, no big deal, nothing happened, I'll let him explain if he wants to.

Mike, thanks for organizing this, it was a blast!

Holy freakin keeerap it was a long day! I got home just before midnight, finally unloaded.

I've decided to re-name this run the Lost Boys Tour. Since the un-modified rig was Chuck's Bronco, and my XJ was the smallest, we tried to take the back roads to Rollins Pass East. I'm not sure, but I think we may have done Yankee Hill (FS 175.2...or 3, then a C and a B). After getting directions back to Central City, we resisted trying any other dirt roads just because they had a sign with names we recognized. We took highway 119 up to Rollinsville, headed over to Jenny Creek.

Jenny Creek was terrible! Huge rocks everywhere, a full size Dodge pickup blocked the trail, nobody had fun, I think Mark might have locked his hubs, I did not get any body damage, Chuck will probably lead the next run.

OK, we had a blast! Jeff, Dude! Whatever you have scheduled for the Bronco, bump it up a little. I think Chuck does want to go back soon. I didn't wash the Jeep or fill the tank tonight. Hopefully she won't see it in the morning.

What's this about Mark getting pulled over??? I'm guessing that taking 119 past CC/Blackhawk had something to do with that. I took the road less traveled; Highway 72 to 93.

The one time I thought he would meet Gilpin County's finest, they caught him being good. Chuck and I had just cleared two of the bigger puddles in the road when the Sheriff drove past in the opposite direction. Mark said he didn't go through the puddles that time. LOL
