I think, at least from what I've seen, is that for the most part four-wheelers are generally accepted in Colorado and are not thought of (much) as redneck drunken hillbillies out trashing the forest. Luckily there is enough GOOD four-wheelers in the state they outweigh the bad. They pick up the beer cans, pick up the tires left in the forest, and other things so the negativity doesn't make it to the media like it does in some other places. That's one of the reasons I like that we adopt Saxon Mountain each year, it gives us (the responsible wheelers) the ability to make up for the shortcomings of our less-responsible peers, and make the entire four-wheeling community look good :).
There's hasnt been much in the news in Colorado in recent years about four-wheeling, at least that I've noticed. The only few stories that come to mind are the idiots from KBPI that trashed the private property thinking they had the right to be there... the guy that got his dodge truck stuck way off-camber on the side of the mountain after following a sheep path instead of a wheeling trail, and thats about all I can think of. I'm sure others will fill me in on more though.

Thats why when you wheel with us you tread lightly or you don't wheel with us. There is always trash and things associated with wheeling, but it doesn't take much to have a trash bag or two in your rig. It really doesn't take all that much to get a trail closed, but it takes an act of GOD to get one re-opened.

Matt, you make an excellent arguement. I've seen how a couple of my friends 4 wheel and i refuse to go with them again. They left litter everywhere, they tossed their old cigarette butts any random place, and were also concerned on digging ruts where they were'nt supposed to be.
Thats why I wheel with everyone here. Not only is it a much more fun group of people, but a responsible group of people. I am the youngest person in the group who goes up with Larry, Rich, Jesse and all of them, but everyone is treated equal and held to the same standards on keeping the trail clean and making a good impression. I love the fact alcohol is prohibited while wheeling, it shows responsibility to the group, as well as other clubs who run into us.
I read reports and letters in 4WOR and Four Wheeler about trails being shut down and 4 wheelers getting a bad rep, but if everyone was responsible, then there wouldn't be an issue. If i bring anyone with me, i usually have one extra, and i hold them to high standards.
Its amazing the impression you leave, and I talk about the group all the time with friends, co-workers, and anyone who asks. Its an amazing group with high, but achievable standards.

Yup, it's the bad apples that give resonsible wheelers a bad reputation. The lowlife punks that torched & taped it, probably weren't even wheeling enthusiasts but somehow, it gets interpreted as "OMG! Look at what those disgusting 4 wheeling people do!"
I've said it before & I'll say it again............I carry a couple trash bags in my truck & pick up trash along the trail when I see it. I've always done this & always will.
My trash is always disposed of in my trash bag in the back of my truck. I've never left a cig butt on the trail, they go in the "butt bucket" in my truck or in my pocket when I'm out of my truck. My empty water bottles, potato chip bags, etc go home with me.
Everytime I've been on the trails with the folks from RMFTC, there's "NEVER" been anyone that I've seen litter the trail. You folks are responsible wheelers & I'm glad to be a part of it. Even when my hubs grenaded last year, we found all the pieces instead of leaving them on the trail. Years ago, when I was teaching some newbies the finer points of wheeling, two guys littered the trail, one threw a Pepsi can in the trees & the other threw a candy bar wrapper on the ground. I picked up their litter & explained to them both that it was not only unethical to litter anywhere, but why it is very important to not litter the trails if they want to continue to wheel on open trails. They understood & all was good after that.
Chuck, I've always refrained from drinking on the trails. I won't even sip on a beer when wheeling. But,........back at the campsite after the trail run,............that's a different story :D A person can still get a DUI on a trail & aside from the possible danger, why chance it? I want the trail runs I organize to remain as safe as possible. I'm not against drinking, I'm against drinking & driving (together) even when it's on the trails.
Thanks for that video Shawn
It's good to know that RMFTC is full of responsible wheelers

There's a time and a place for alcohol. Drinking and driving isn't it. When i went up with the other group who was irresponsible they had drank a full 24 pack by the time we were done. I never touched the stuff. I will never go with them again after watching what they did.
Around the camp when the trucks are parked, the beer should come out, no problems there. Party hard then! I don't drink, don't care to, but don't mind those who do.
We have a nice, respectful, and responsible 4 wheeling culture here at RMFTC, one that comes natural, but is enforced like hell, and its a pleasure to be a big part of it. Lets keep it up and thanks Shawn for keeping us aware of what we are preventing.

it is fun to take beer drinkers to top of trail ridge road with a case in the back and have fun watching them get drunk on two beers when they can usually drink 12 and still walk though, just dont drive when yer drinking

i agree with y'all but there is a tradition in my home club of new years wheeling where we hit the trails immediatly after leaving the bar on the newyears 12:01....it has caused problems but we always have sober-er ppl to drive

If you are talking about the Hiking gear, there is a thread in the general duscussion section that tells you how to get started.
Called Outdoor gear testing or something like that.
