View Full Version : So who's upgraded to "Vista?"

Out of curiousity, if you have it, how do you like it? Does it run better (faster) than XP? Did you install over an existing XP installation? Did you have problems?

As for me, I don't have any immediate plans to do so for two reasons:
1) Upgrading with MS is scary and usually means having to replace a bunch of shit. It's usually much easier to just purchase an entirely new computer with the new OS already installed.

2) I actually already have Vista - it's called Mac OS X. :p Yeah, yeah, call me an "Apple Fanboy" if you want but - if you have any experience with Mac OS X - there's no possible way to defend how arrogant MS has become in ripping off good ideas and calling them their own.
An interesting review of Vista: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QT6YO30GhmQ

And of course, there's this classic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Y_Jp6PxsSQ

As with any Windows operating system upgrade, I'll wait at least a year or two to do it. I never understand the people who wait outside compusa the night of an os upgrade to buy their copy, its always super-buggy with major problems and always takes a few months to get thems traightened out, no matter how many year it was in production. In fact, I'll probably never upgrade to it. With a PC its a little different because if it doesn't like a video card driver, you can just go out and get a new video card, modem, etc. but with a laptop, you can't just go get a new video card and you'd be reliant on Dell, Toshiba, etc. to have appropriate drivers. Someday in a few years I"ll be a new laptop, it'll have Vista on it, and we'll be set.

I agree with Chris's #1, and Matt. There ususally is too much stuff that needs to be worked out and I find it easier just to buy a new system about a year after the OS's release.

Not going to upgrade any time soon for the same reasons Chris & Matt mentioned. I am going to the MS dog & pony show on Thursday with a buddy to get my free copy of Office 2007 so my Groove program keeps running.

I have played around with it quite a bit these last couple of days being the mother of my kids went and bought a new computer and I had to transfer everything over to it. I actually like some of its features mean while I hate some of them. I have noticed it is a real memory hog and likes a lot of memory. Another thing I have noticed is they renamed a lot of things. For instance when in control panel to add/remove programs they renamed it to something else (can't remember off the top of my head). So you just have to look around on it a lot more. Oh and if you have a system error, it takes a good 15 minutes to recover from it during start up. I removed McAffee antivirus as I am a true believer in Avast! antivirus (free!) and the damn thing about blew up. LOL It wanted to goto a previous restore point and this and that..

Then what really got me going was she has MSN Explorer through Qwest for DSL (she likes the pics feature or something through MSN and not IE/MSN.com). Well, Vista doesn't come with MSN Explorer. Now being Microsoft makes/made MSN Explorer and Windows you would think that they would be compatible right?? NOT. So, I download the most recent version from MS and install it (which took almost 30 minutes) and then run the program after it install and pops up something saying "this has known compatibility issues.." BRILLIANT!! But I could have swore I read something saying it would work on Vista. So I click "ignore" or whatever and it wouldn't even load.. Fucking Microsoft at its finest!! So she is pissed I told her she will probably have to wait a few months until they make a patch/bug fix or a new version, etc.
I will say that the games that came loaded with it are pretty cool! :D
Thats just a couple of my exp. with it so far. I could go on but I ain't making a damn book. LOL :twocents:

Yup, it does sound like MS at its finest. As for the renaming of things - just find out what it's called on a Mac and I'm sure it's some derivative thereof.

I never believed the whole "it just works" claim with Macs until I got one. Compare it to Windows and it's amazing how much better Apple's code is! I am curious if networking with Vista is as difficult (sometimes impossible) as it was in XP? That's yet another area where Macs are a million times easier...

Ill just put it this way....right now, the DoD is refusing to upgrade to Vista due to all the security holes...we tested it, and it just did not have the capabilities that are needed in todays world.

I upgraded one machne to Linux Ubuntu, talk about easy WOW!! It acts and feels like Winblows. If I wernt so Linux stupid and dependent on Winblows I'd put it on all machines.

I've also talked to another guy who upgraded to Vista and he is having to go find programs that work with it. A lot of the ones he uses dont.

I went to the MS rollout event aka the dog-&-pony show today. Not very impressed, very slow even on the demo guy's laptop. I'll wait for at least a year before making any moves.

I did get my free copy of Office 2007 & Groove 2007, I'll be installing that this weekend!

I think its proof that good marketing doesn't make up for a poor quality product... :)

I own a top f the line gaming laptop, and it will barely run the full version of vista at full speed, which is disappointing to say the least
