View Full Version : Is Blockbuster Dying? (I Hope!)
Just curious - how do you rent your movies? Amy and I usually go to the Red Box kiosks at McDonald's - only $1 (plus tax) per rental and they typically have a decent selection of the newer movies. I also rent on occasion at King Soopers - about $2.50 per movie. If it's a movie I don't really care about, I just wait for it to come out on cable (HBO, etc.).
As you may notice from the above, I never rent from Blockbuster if I can help it at all. I think the prices they charge (nearly $5 per new release rental!) are ridiculous and I predict (and hope) they're out of business completely within 10 years. Their business model is out of date with downloading, on-demand (cable/satellite) and other technologies becoming more and more popular. That and they still haven't been able to compete well with Netflix. I love it because I hate Blockbuster... :)

I use RedBox as well for that purpose. The girlfriend has Netflix though so we always have 3 DVDs in the house.

My sister used to manage a blockbuster, which just prooved they have no clue :).
I remember when DVD's were first coming out, it took Blockbuster FOREVER to start renting them out. I know I had had a DVD player (and I"m usually behind technology by at least a year or two) for at least a year before they started renting them... and even then they are outrageously priced! I see them trying things to stay alive like doing the mail order thing like netflix, etc. but the fact is, who will pay $5 to rent a DVD when you can rent it other places for much much less? Hell with eBay, if you are looking for an older movie, you can buy it on ebay for about as much as you can rent it from blockbuster, and then you can be pretty sure the DVD won't be all scratched up and everything, which I remember having a problem with blcokbuster on many occasions with.

I got a 1.99 coupon in the mail for a movie so I went in a couple days ago. Now they stuff a free membership for a month to blockbuster online in your bag. Im hoping netflix will just buy them like they did walmarts online service.

I have Netflix, but the movies usually just sit on the top of the tv, forgotten. I'm pretty sure I could have bought several of the movies a few times over with the monthly charges I paid while I had them. But its nice to know I can watch them if I want.
I've rented from King soopers before.
I had problems with Blockbuster about 10 years ago, so I don't rent there. I don't even remember what the problem was.
As you can tell, I don't rent a lot of movies. I'm more of a tv guy.

I rent from a small store called Hastings... I like their policy I pay. $3.69 for the rental of any DVD and if I bring it back the next day I get a $1 credit... Or I can keep it for 5 days... If I go over I basically rent it for another 5 days... I've been debating about trying Netflix... I just haven't decided yet... I tend to rent a lot of movies just from browsing the shelves and I like to get new releases the day they come out usually...
No Red Box here guys...

You can rent movies from McDonalds? (does that tell you how many I rent?)
A friend of mine used to run the video section of the city market in Woodland Park and he used to go over to the blockbuster and tell people over their shoulder *psst, you can rent that cheaper at city market*

I don't rent movies. I just wait until they come on one of the movie channels.

JuBean, a lot of the McDonalds around here have Redbox machines, just like a vending machine with a computer screen where you can pick out the movies you want, etc... you swipe your card, out comes the video. $1 plus tax.

Blockbuster pissed me off 5 years ago & I haven't rented from them since. I hate that place. Not as inexpensive as Netflix but we rent from Hollywood, the one we go to doesn't have punkass kids with an attitude behind the counter, they have youngsters that know how to do their job & are polite. It's actually pleasant going there so far. There were two times I forgot to return a video on time & they called me & politely reminded me. When I went in to return it & explained that it was late, (one day late), they didn't charge me a late charge even though I was expecting it & willing to pay it because it was my fault. I'll keep going there until they give me reason not too.
Did I mention that I HATE Blockbuster?

Kristen and I usually wait for movies to come out on PPV, then say how much we would like to watch it, and 2 months later watch it on HBO, Cinemax, or one of the other channels we get (with the kids now we really dont watch to many movies) besides who has time for movies when you have the internet at your finger tips????

So Blockbuster is dead. But we do have RedBox machines. You're just dying to watch Commando after a long days wheeling. You don't own it. What are you going to do? Watch Little Man at the theater?

Matt, maybe in touch with his feminine side, but I'm really disturbed by this. Now you're looking at flowers with guys in tight shorts.

No, Heath. That's what we've been saying for years about your marriage to Tara... :D
As for the "guys in tight shorts," that may be what you're looking at, Jeff. Me? I see a sport I love and a competition (the Tour de France) that (even with all the doping allegations) amazes me every time I watch it. :p

HAHAHA - Another nail in Blockbuster's coffin! :D Did anyone catch Apple's big announcement yesterday. Along with lowering the prices on their iPods and re-introducing all of the models (with a few changes), you can now download full-length movies at very good quality. They also announced availability of an "iTV" box that lets you wirelessly play content (movies, music, podcasts, etc.) stored on your computer on your TV. Pretty slick stuff. No wonder Apple owns the downloadable media market right now. I'm only surprised Microsoft hasn't tried to take them on with their own MP3 player/music download service.
The funny thing is - with such domination in this area - how long before Apple, which has always been seen as the "cool outsider" in the computing industry, is seen as another uncaring corporate beheometh? Time will tell I suppose.
As for me, I already have an iPod shuffle and love it - but the new one is pretty incredible! It's currently the smallest MP3 player in the world. If it gets any smaller, I don't know that you could operate it!
