I think Fords recommendation varies between "every 30,000 miles" to "the fuel filter should last the life of the vehicle". Well I figured $7, what the heck, I already had the tool to do it. It was by far the most-needed fuel filter I'd ever seen done. I didn't open it up to look, but I know that when it drained out the back it was draining almost solid black gasoline. That can't be good.
Based on how rusty the fuel filter and fuel lines were, I'd guess it has not been done in the life of the vehicle.

I think I did the Taurus in '02; same year we got it from my sister. While she had it my brother did the fuel pump/filter for her. I just changed pump & filter again this last week; hot start issues, weak pump, and yeah, black stuff out the back of the filter.
