This pertains to building my 390 FE and that post got lost during the system crash...

Well, I am back to square one with just a bare block that is begging to be assembled.

I had the crankshaft in and all 7 pistons and connecting rods except for #4. On #4 I noticed there was a "nick" or "gouge" in the crankshaft. I argued with myself on whether or not to keep going but I decided I better pull it out and take it back to the machine shop and am I glad I did. Basically, I hadn't torqued down the connecting rod caps yet but they were tight, just not to spec yet. Upon disassembly I see 3 other connecting rod bearings have scratches in them already. :angryfire:

Come to find out someone did something wrong or the machines stone that they use to turn the crankshaft fucked the crankshaft up somehow. I feel they did not "chamfer" the holes on the crankshaft that the oil runs through to lubricate the bearings. So, they had some burrs and caused it to eat my new bearings and the engine has only been turned over maybe a total of 5 times. So the crankshaft is back at the machine shop getting fixed (hopefully right this time or they are buying me a new one) and I won't get it till Monday. What sucks even more is I just got more parts from Summit Racing today too. :( So reassembly will come next week now.

If I wouldn't have done this and kept going the engine might have only ran for an hour before it would start knocking and then I would be in worse shape that I am in now. So yeah, better to find it on the engine stand then in the truck running later and then I would have really come undone on someone at the machine shop.

Sorry, had to vent a little. Maybe I will edit this and put some pics up of the bearings later...

Good Call

Even as disapointing as it is, waiting will pay off versus putting it together like it was.

Here is a pic of the #2 connecting rod bearing. You can see the groove in the pic. Sorry about quality of pic, battery's died on good camera so my phone had to substitute for it but you can still see the general idea and that the groove is not supposed to be there.
