View Full Version : Camping August 7th/8th or 14/15th at Saxon Mountain?

We had discussed the possibility of going camping up at Saxon Mtn one of the first weekends in August so I'm wondering what might work best for the most folks. We found some real good spots near the "highland hills" area (where we might be helping put a fence in eventually) where its free camping, not much traffic, and decent level spots where we could camp without too much interuption. A 2wd (Dom) could probably make it though the possibility for scraping the underneath is pretty good if you don't ahve good ground clearance. I'm thinking we could drive in Saturday, set up camp, then people can hang out, wheel around, hike around, whatever they feel like doing and then we could pack up and leave on Sunday whenever folks felt like leaving.
We can try to arrange bringing some camping equipment like stoves, coolers, etc. so we can eat while out there but this way there'd be no hiking "required" so we could pack in heavy stuff :).
Let me know what you think!

August 7th/8th works best for me. I forgot I have some plans the 14th... but I'm ok with showing up late or whatever...
Yeah, August 7th/8th works okay for me as well. Dom will like the part about no hiking and packing in heavy stuff. I think he's bringing a big screen TV or something. :P
Just out of curiousity, who (besides me) is planning on renting some camping gear at REI? Let me know if you are and perhaps we can coordinate doing so at one time...

Chris, if you want a tent, I'm sure my dad will loan you one, hes got like a dozen or some rediculous amount, LOL. I'm planning on bringing a decent sized tent and a queen sized air bed for me, Courtney, and Maggie. That's the good part about driving there, you can bring a 25 pound airbed, 3 pound inflator, and 30 pounds tent and not worry about the weight, LOL.
Hmmm, I don't think I'll be in too good of standings if I do this the weekend of my daughters 2nd birthday party, so it looks like another one you guys successfully planned where I can't go.

Tray, bring the kids! :)

I think it would be against the law for kids to see some of the things that are bound to happen up there! LOL :bootyshake:

This is true... sounds like the 7th/8th is somewhat the consensus for everyone. It works for me. I think the area around the little marshy area would work well as a campsite or we can follow that trail for another little ways and see if theres any better spots later on, etc. Either way I think it will be a fun time! :).
Yeah, I doubt I could afford the counseling they'd need after that traumatic of a weekend.
I know that as I was growing up, I have a lot of pictures where my parents brought a 'potty seat' along for our camping trips. I was still learning how to use the pot, but could handle a fishing pole, putting up a tent, and cooking over the fire. Go figure.

Tray, if your 8 or 9 and still learning to use the pot, that could be an issue! LOL.
Shit, I was talking about last year. What's wrong with using diapers until I was 25?
Nothing wrong with that at all. Heck, if you time it just right, you can go straight from diapers to Depends... :D

Does anyone know what the fire restrictions are? If we can have a Fire, I'll definately be there, otherwise I don't know. I also have some wood to bring if no one wants to have to hunt for it.

In talking with the Forest Service, they said there are fire restrictions in place, but the chances of teh sheriff coming out and busting us or anything is next to impossible... basically they said if we have a fire, just be very careful and be sure its put out completely (I'll be bringing my 5-gallong water container as hoepfully othes will too...) and then theres nothign to worry about. I think campfires are an important part of camping :).
near this marshy area, there isn't really any dry trees nearby or anything, so I'm not too worried about it.
I've got a bunch of firewood I could bring too.

im definately coming, but imnot sure about my stock f-250 making it through the trails. but we will see. now i got the gf wanting to go to. anyone else bringing a lady friend? i dont want to have to deal with her the whole time. but maybe she will decide not to come. oh well.

you might scrape underneath a bit, but you can make the trail no problem. Jen's jeep liberty made it, though it hit a bunch of stuff too, LOL.
As far as lady friends going, Courtney (up2mylbowsnmud) will probably be coming, and Jen will be there... don't know of any others though.

I don't think there will be a problem for an F-250, especially if we come up from Idaho Springs. Just take it nice and slow.

Jeff, are you going or not? You havent said yet :).
And yes I do plan on coming up from the springs. Theres a lot of spurs on that side of the trail I haven't yet "discovered" enough of and I want to do some playing around!

I would really like to go. It sounds like there is going to be a big turn out which will make it fun and I don't want to miss all of the stories.
But, I really need to get some stuff fixed on the truck. It's going to come down to $$$. I have camping gear. I'm planning on picking up 02 sensors this week and Cory said he would help me out when the temperatures cool down.
At this point I'm 70% going.

Jeff, I'll help with your O2 sensors if you need help, to keep the prices down so you can go camping. I've done a few recently. They are kind of a pain but they aren't impossible.
If you REALLY wanted to save some money, I've got some O2 sensors I pulled out of my truck at 50,000 miles when I did my headers. They wouldn't last as long as new ones obviously, but you can have them for free if you want them.

I appreciate the off Matt. I figure I'll buy new ones since they have to be done anyways and I'll let Cory install them one evening after work.

I thought this trail was easier than Bill Moore. If that is the case, no worries about a stock F-250. I'm taking mine with bad ball joints and loose rear wheel bearings. With that said, I'll have to meet someone in Idaho Springs to follow since I will avoid I-70 as much as possible. The truck gets a little squirly at high speeds.

Definitely easier than Bill Moore Lake.

I'm up for meeting in Idaho Springs, I'll just be absolutely certain to be going exactly the speed limit! LOL.

Too far in the future for me to know if I will be able to go. School is starting up and I have football practice, so I will just have to wait and see.

No I'm not bringing the big screen, and yes I will be bringing my fishing stuff. On Monday I went fishing and wheeling off of Fall River Road, which is the exit after idaho spring. The trail is very easy and provides 3 lakes, excellent hiking opportunities and absolutely awesome views of the mounts and lakes. This is on national forest property so it would be free also. It is also only miles from saxon mtn and billmoore lake trails. Jen will most likely be going with me as well.

Me, Wife, 2 year old boy and 5 year old coon hound .. along with 'uncle Johnny' ... are all planning on loading into the SupaCrew and meeting up with you all ... we can't wait!
I'm down with meeting in Idaho Springs ... what time?
We are also cool with the pot luck ... do we have a running list of who's bringing what ?

cool, the more the merrier :).
As far as times, I proposed meeting at Safeway around 10am, but if people wanted to head up later I can easily come back into town and play "tour guide" to get people back to the camping site. It's hard to draw a map cause theres a lot of wrong turns you can take.
Heres the "info" thread: http://www.rmftc.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=212
And heres the pot luck thread, so far no ones mentioned anything but beer LOL.

FYI ... I went to Sears this last weekend to pickup a new lawnmower and couldn't help but notice they have ALL their camping equipment on sale right now. I saw a 4 person Hillary Tent for $49! We picked up a new 2 room tent for $89!!
Check 'em out .. it may be a better solution than renting ...

im going to have to find this safeway and idaho springs for that matter. i havent really been very many places in fort collins and the surrounding area. but ill look at a map and find idaho springs. anyone know the address of the safeway or what street its on?
mattadams
07-15-2004, 10:22 AM
Trust me, you find idaho springs, you'll find the safeway. Its a small town, and safeway is the only grocery store in town. If you take the exit off I-70 for Idaho Springs it'll be one of the first buildings you'll see.
Just go the speed limit, we had a bad experience in Idaho Springs before! LOL.

bikes are definately allowed. Tell your friends to sign up on RMFTC though, LOL.

y33, one thing I forgot to mention, they can come, but remind them to be considerate of others, motorbikes are typically loud and one of the true joys of camping is the peace and quiet, so as long as they dont go ripping through camp or whatever I"m ok with it. Also, as with any other RMFTC event, they just have to behave responsible like all the truck owners do, which means no going off trails, no leaving trash or purposely ripping up the trail, etc.
Also, I'd prefer that the people that come be RMFTC members... which is why I mentioned they should sign up... otherwise its just a huge party and not really what I'm hoping to achieve with the members here. Obviously I'm not going to turn away folks, but I'd rather keep it as large as RMFTC can make it, but as intimate as possible where everyone knows everyone, etc.

i may bring the four wheeler. since i have enough room to pack all my camping gear in the back seat and so that leaves room for the atv. havent decided yet, but its fun to run around in.

if you do can I ride for a few minutes? I've never done it and it looks like SOOOOOO much fun!
fyi: clean driving record ;)

Not a problem! I'll definitely get all them fools to sign up ..!
The neighbors are real nice California transplants .. the guy(Marion) and I were talking the other day about biking .... camping etc ... and he was just saying he wished he could find a cool place/group to go with and have some fun .. so the rmftc may be just what he's looking for!
don't worry .. I'm not inviting any irresponsible 'loud' 20 year old punks! :D
Speaking of bikes - is anyone considering bringing some real ones - like the kind you pedal??? :D:wink: If someone else does, I'll bring mine. I think it would be cool to explore some of the many trail spurs out there on a bicycle - get a really good workout at high altitude too!

LOL as you know, I dont have one. lol... but even if I did, it sounds like fun, but I think I would die if I tried up there, I could barely breathe putting stickers on things up there!

Hi, im new to the site, but i live in Clear Creek County......i was reading some of these posts, and there is a fire ban in this county...but seeing as how i have a friend in the S.O. dispatch, and he puts all calls on the air, ill just bring my scanner, and weel pick up the sheriff traffic if they head up there. Also, ill see if I cant get a few forest service "piss packs" the backpacks with nozzles used for extinguishing hot spots after a fire...if we dont need them to put out the campfires, they could be worth some cheap fun. Anyways, i just hope my new motor is in my truck and running by then, with the way the rain has been starting right when i get home from work, i dont know if that will happen  .... I take it since everyone is meeting in idaho springs, that thats which side the journey is starting on?..
Should be nice to meet some new people...living in the mountains, being 20, and not doing somethings most the kids up here do makes it difficult to find people to wheel with sometimes...
