Hey guys... I was at my local Pet Ranch store today getting crickets for me geckos. They have an adorable little Dachshund puppy. She is so tiny. I think I want here, but not sure about pet-store-puppies. Any opinions either way?
I did look at MaxFund, but the only Dachshund there needed to be adopted with another dog.

I have generally heard to stay away from pet stores in general, because of the puppy mills that are the inherent suppliers for the stores. Basically have no concern whatsoever for the health or happiness of the animals, just breed them, sell them, and go on to the next litter. Often they are stacked in cages with no floors so feces and urine drops down from the top dogs onto the lower dogs, even as newborns.
My personal advice is to try another shelter. A few other ones to check out other then maxfund that might have some dachsunds are the Denver Dumb Friends League (www.ddfl.org), the Colorado humane society (www.coloradohumane.org), or a variety of other shelters.
If you are set on a puppy or want one with a known history, you can generally get a "higher quality" from a reputable breeder. You will often pay even a little less from a breeder then at a pet store and can often get a health guarantee, etc.
While a lot of good dogs come from pet stores, there has been some horror stories too. Do an internet search for puppy mill, you might find some scary stuff.

yea. I read some stuff.. scary
We screwed up and bought a boxer puppy from one of those places long ago. It was before I knew how bad things were. I found out later from my vet that her tail had been docked improperly, and was always going to be a traumatic spot for her. Then there were health issues like nobody's business. Then she ended up biting me one day while I was giving her a bath, and we had to relinquish her, because I couldn't take the chance on having her bite our daughter (only had 1 at the time).
We did find a pretty good place though. On 104th by Red Lobster, there is a place behind the car rental office. The people live way out east, and drive down either Thursday or Friday night with all the puppies, then pack up again Sunday evening, and take them back to their ranch. The place is always clean, they have reasonable prices, and are extremely wonderful ladies to deal with.
There's another place I've seen, but have no experience with that is off of Washington, just south of I-70. It's called something like North Washington Street Kennels, or something. I don't know about the people or how their puppies are brought up, but I figured I could always throw it out there.
As for Maxfund, last weekend there were 2 there. Half of the pair who need to stay together, as well as another by himself. I haven't been back since, but he wasn't on the website then, so if you are just going by that, then I'd suggest a trip down there. The lady in charge doesn't keep things nearly as updated as those of us who volunteered to keep it going would do, so half of the dogs on the site are adopted, and half of the dogs in the shelter don't have pics on the web.

Just my .02 cents. Well, mine and a good portion of the other half's....I'm just the one typing :)
DO NOT GET A CRITTER FROM PET RANCH! I think crickets are okay though...
That sounds very harsh but the owner has been run out of 3 cities: Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, and Westminster. Now he/she (?)'s in Arvada. They've got the cutest critters there but I will NOT step foot in the business. The paintball store that used to be next door to Pet Ranch (Paint Pellet Game) had an article about Pet Ranch in their store. Apparently there are so many people that do not like the store, owner, you name it, due to the health of the pets and the cleanliness of the store.

Dont buy an animal from ANY pet store, period. The only exception I would make is places like PetsMart that are actual adoption centers. I would love to see a law passed that banned pet stores from selling puppies because very few of them are actually healthy. It seems like every time we get a 'pet store exam' at work they dog has an issue and far to often it is serious like Parvo or Pneumonia. At least breeders are smart enough to try and eliminate hereditary issues like agression but not the mills that supply 'pet stores.'
Pet stores will bend you over with their prices (even with a mutt) and then you will have to fight tooth and nail to get them to pay for getting the dog healthy, if that is possible.
But I have no opinions on this matter
