Tonight, the season officially started. Are there any NHL fans in the club? I'm an Avalanche fan and will probably watch about 95% of the games on television. Interesting new rules, should increase scoring and if tonight was any indication, there was a lot scoring league wide.

I love hockey, it ranks up there as one of my favorites. Too bad the tickets are just about as expensive as Broncos tickets or I'd actually go to a game or two.

I watched a bit of the Avs game last night but still have some bad feelings about last season. I'm sure I'll get over it sooner or later, but I couldn't help thinking a bit negatively about all those millionaires skating around like nothing happened...

I just hope that the strike of the NHL sends a message to unions everywhere (I'm NOT a fan of unions)... that you might htink you are doing something for the good, but what you are doing is being greedy. And often, you'll come out of it much worse than you went into it. Look at it this way, they went on strike because they opposed salary caps (boo hoo, I'm only getting millions of dollars a year to skate around and try to get a puck through a goal), and after a year of much lower "strike pay", they finally came back to work, with a salary cap, and many of them making millions LESS per year then they were before.
Greedy bastards.
Just like Qwest threatening to go on strike because they have to pay for their own health benefits... (once again, no offense Heath)... WAKE UP!!! EVERYBODY HAS TO PAY THEIR OWN HEALTH BENEFITS!!! Lazy ass clowns.

Yeah, I almost wished the stadiums had only been 1/4 full yesterday - send a message. Instead they were packed/sold out. Ah well, I guess we're all sheep.

The part about last season that really bothered me was the lack of concern the teams had for other support personnel. It's not just about the players and owners. What about all the people who sell beer, food, merchandise at the games? What about the folks (some of whom I know personally) who televise the games? The parking attendants, security, etc., etc., etc. - it goes on and on and on. All of those people were out of jobs last season because those f**kers wanted more money.

That's the part that really bothered (and still bothers) me...

I enjoy hockey but I just dont have time to watch it much. I sometimes go to games, and I always catch the Avs playoffs but thats about it.

Hockey? What's that?

I'll watch the Avs if there is nothing better on, but with the Yanks in the playoffs yet again, and football season, I have no time to even think about Hockey.

In no way am I going to sit here and justify ANY pro player making the kind of money they do, but in all honesty, hockey players have been payed the least, and in my opinion, for a more active game in it's entirety. Baseball players making what they make is ludacris. Millions of dollars, and there's a possibility that they won't even TOUCH the ball.......w/ hands or bats. Ridiculous! At least the other 3 major sports, including motorsports, have physical contact. The players actually work.

TRAY............the Yankees! You got to be kidding. This is what I think of the Yankees.:pottytrain4:

Yeah, pretty much everyone thinks that way, and it's ok. I can't fault people for having bad judgement. There are people who like the raiders, people who drive H3s, or Pontiac Aztecs, and men who wear women's clothing. While I definitely don't agree with them, nor can I understand where they are coming from, I believe you all should be entitled to your opinions.

GO YANKS!!!

Whats all this talk about hockey not being played last year?

I like all major sports for one reason. If I need to do any shopping I know the stores will be deserted during a major sporting event. (mainly football)
As for athletes salaries, I think we should pay them around $30,000 a year average and start paying teachers 1.5 mill. Then get the bad and mediocre ones the hell out! From working in a school I can honestly say there's a whole lot of teachers that shouldn't have jobs and with high pay comes high expectations. Ok, now let me climb off this soap box.

Ray, with Courtney being a teacher we've talked in great detail about this before. I think the whole idea of tenure is absolutely bullshit. The idea that you work there long enough theres no way they can fire you. I know in 7th grade, I had the worst teacher of my life, Ms. Limon. Funny part is, my brother had her 4 years previous and said she was terrible then too. She'd beent eaching for some 30 years, didn't give a rats ass if students succeeded, was an absolute bitch, but they couldn't fire her. Just so happens they tried to get her to quit the year I was going through 7th grade by putting most of the poor behavers and poor performers into her class (don't know how I got in there, I was actually alright) which meant I was subject to much more than the average rate of abuse, and it was just because htey wanted to get her to quit. It must've worked because the next year she went to the high school instead, stayed there two years and then retired (so thank god I didnt have her again).
I find it absolute bullcrap that the people that are in charge of our childrens success (because most parents won't do it!) are barely makign enough to scrape by, while, like you said, others make millions for playing a sport. Teachers work way more hours and have much mroe to do with the success of our country as a whole then some guy who can run with a ball in his hands.

Couldn't agree more, Matt. Of course, I'm not sure how unbiased we are anymore since both of our girlfriends are teachers. ;) Still, I don't think many rational people would argue that the work teachers do isn't incredibly important...

I think the work they do is incredibly important but I also think there are a lot of teachers that shouldn't be teaching. I've heard a lot of college kids use teaching as a fall back career. (If I can't cut it as a doctor or lawyer... I could always teach.) You never hear an athlete say; "well, I'm going for a master's in paleontology but if that fails I guess I'll just have to look into that NFL thing."
That's the problem. Before we can weed out the bad ones, we need to pay enough to attract the good ones and to keep the good ones from moving on to other careers to make ends meet. We need the ones who would become doctor's and judges to have a financial reason to consider teaching.
If you are an aspiring pro athlete your odds of making it to the pros are probably a million to one at the highschool level. ( meaning for every million kids running around in a football helmet on friday nights only one will actually make it all the way through college and to the pros.) There are many kids with the drive and determination to make it to the pros but if you are 5'2" it doesn't matter how driven you are, you'll never be a linebacker. That's how it should be with teaching.
And no bitching about testing. It should be a high paid position available to the best qualified and those in that position WILL be evaluated, tested and scrutinized with NO guarantee that you will be teaching next year if you arent able to make the cut!!!
Just like the pros.
Damn this soapbox is tall.

a BIG +1 to that, but I will still watch the AV's. I'm actually glad it started,I'm not a big fan of any of the other sports(I know, I know, foolish), so with hockey back on I can actually go to the sports bars. Oh wait I don't go to bars any more, Oh well it will look and sound better at home.........

5'2-5'9 just like they used to do with flight attendants.
I meant that you can have the best of intentions but still not have what it takes to do the job.
