I spoke with the Forest Service today... unfortunately the two rangers are busy the same weekend we had planned on going up, but apparently they were so impressed with us and how responsible we were, and the way we handled the trail last year, that they agreed ot meet up with me, give me some signs to take up, and we can run it without them, since we know how to fill out all the forms, etc. it should be no big thing.
So lets plan on meeting up at the Georgetown lake around 10:30 that morning, and we can have lunch somewhere along the trail. Bring your cameras, sunscreen, and lunch, as well as lots of water! :).
We'll monitor the trail a bit, see what needs to be done, possibly put in a few new signs, and let them know of any major projects that need to be done.

I'll be spending the day at Filmore Plaza gawking at the scenery... and getting sunburned. It seems every year that I have gone to this car show is the hottest day of the year. LOL..

Chris, do I need to remind you that we planned it on the 18th cause you said thats the one weekend that would work for you... ugh... wheres everyone else that said they'd help if we did the trail adoption?

MMPC

Yeah, I know it - but when work calls and you're self-employed, you've got to go. :( I am still interested in helping, however, but July is a whole lot better than June...

we will also try to schedule something in July, I'd like to get up there more then once :).
Hopefully for this run they are going to have the signs done in time that say "Trail adopted by Rocky Mountain Ford Truck Club" that we can put up on this trail run.
Not sure if everyone has CB's and so forth, if I take my dads truck I wont have a CB with me, but I will have my Motorola FRS radios with me, I know thats what Dom and others are running too, so I guess between teh two of em we should be in good shape :).

Does anyone know if Saxon Mt. is open? This evening I was checking out Colorado4x4.org and reports were Bill Moore Lake is still not open all the way, because of snow drifts. Some are thinking it's still a couple of weeks. People who were up there today said it was snowing. I've also read over there that parts of Spring Creek have a little snow, but is open. I've not been up Spring Creek, but I think it intersects Saxon Mt. trail.

Thats funny, I talked to the forest ranger about the same exact thing. I do not know for sure if it is open. I know that they got a bunch more snow yesterday at the eisenhower tunnel, so we could very well run into some snow on the trail. Forest Service guy said he didn't have time to scout it, but had a feeling that we might run into some snow, but wasnt sure if it would be blocked by snow or not.
I guess we will find out :). I'm sure we should at least make it past the switchbacks but not sure from there ... I've never seen where its not completely open in mid-june, but you never know, lots of snow this year!

this isn't looking good... my explorer is currently without a transmission and has a busted up front end.
I don't think that I'll be able to make this one. I'll make the one in July though, if it's not when I'm gone.

ok I spoke to Brent from the Forest Service today... he said that they are going to have signs available for us for this trip, and they are actually going to send a ranger up there with us, James, who went with us last year. He will ahve the signs and all the information needed for us.
He said they went up there over the weeknd on ATV's and had no real problems with snow, there was still snow on the trail but it didn't prohibit vehicles from going through. Hopefully with another week of warm temperatures, there will be even less.

Hey rino-
If the front end's toast, want to ride shotgun? I'll have an extra seat and the ranger can do this one :)

rino351
06-13-2005, 03:37 PM
That'd be great!

Hey Matt- do ya think my escort could make it up? LOL :P

Yeah, I'll ride shotty with ya!

if any one needs to use a CB or FRS Radio just let me know i will have 2 extra FRS and 2 extra CB's no antenna though for the cb

Rino, it might make it, can't guarantee you'll make it with no body damage though :).
Thanks for the offer Walker! I'll have one spare FRS handheld radio with me as well, so between all of us we should have enough :). For those that haven't purchased any, the FRS's are pretty good units. Don't trust their mileage rating, but can talk with those within about 1/4 mile - 1/2 mile radius usually with no problems, and you can get sets of walkie talkies as cheap as $10 or $15.

Damn, my new tires are supposed to arrive on the 16th. I'd love to test em in the snow in June! LOL...

hey guys, will anyone else have passenger space? I was planning on borrowing my dads truck that weekend, but it will be in use already...
and yes, I realize I could take my truck, thank you... LOL.
If someone has two spare seats that'd be cool, Courtney wants to go too...
oh and the forest service guy would like a spare seat too... LOL

Matt, I was thinking I might be able to make this. It will be me, my 2 kids and their mother. I will need to get directions from you but I will bug you when I see you on AIM. I might also be able to lend you a seat if you would like....

drklawz
06-14-2005, 11:56 PM
Rino- if you're going, let me know, otherwise it sounds like there's some folks who could use a seat.

yeah, I'm going, if the seat's still available

mattadams
06-15-2005, 09:16 AM
if worse comes to worse, Courtney and I might just take her Jeep... that was the forest service guy has a ride for sure too... she's just nervous about it going off-road, which I can understand...

Matt, trying to avoid a potential scheduling conflict... what time are we to meet up w/ said ranger in Georgetown?

mattadams
06-15-2005, 06:07 PM
I would like to leave the lake at 10:30, so if everyone can try to meet around 10-10:15 that'd be great.

Only because my parents still financially support me for the most part and they would not be happy having to fix something for offroad reasons... one day, one day.

mattadams
06-17-2005, 08:18 AM
Cool, sounds good, should be lots of fun. I think Walker2970 has offered me and Courtney seats, as has Dom, so we'll see who ends up having more room in their backseat for us to scrunch in, LOL... and the forest ranger can take one of the other seats available. We'll plan on meeting everyone at the lake, and then if someone can make a trip BACK up I-70 to the lake after the run (since the trail ends in Idaho Springs) that'd be awesome, since the Forest Ranger will need to get back to his car too.
See everyone there around 10ish, hopefully leaving by 10:30!

Hey all,
My friend Kim and a few friends will probably be joining us with her jeep. It's nearly bone stock and it will be her first run in this one. Its bronze colored, and they should be meeting us up there. They're clear this is a working trip, and she's anxious to try an easy trail with some backup there.

Matt, I'm going to lug a couple pick-axes, shovels, pry-bar, trashbags, etc. Anything else?

See you all there!

mattadams
06-17-2005, 08:58 AM
we shouldn't need a whole lot as we won't be doing any "major" trail maintenance this trip, unless something urgent comes up. If someones got a small chain saw, the one we had last time came in handy for the tree that was downed across the trail... otherwise, you've pretty much got it covered. We'll be replacing a few signs, putting up 2 RMFTC signs (one at each end... supposedly), and just doing the basic stuff, looking for any offshoots that shouldn't be there, etc.
Sounds liek you've got the bases covered :)

I was thinking of meeting you guys up there, do you have an estimated time that you might be back into town. Let me know

Niks80
06-17-2005, 02:40 PM
Just to verify, we are meeting at 10:00 at the lake that you can see from I-70 right?

mattadams
06-17-2005, 02:53 PM
Depending on how much time we spend working on stuff, I would estimate we'd be back to town by 3 or 4... maybe earlier if the signs go in easy.
And yes... meeting around 10-10:15, hopefully leaving the lake by 10:30. Georgetown is only one exit on the interstate, and its the only lake there :).

I'll need a ride back up to my car as well, so I'll go back up to Georgetown with whoever is taking the forest ranger back.
See yall tomrrow!

I'm still going to be there, but I will have to probably catch you on the trail. My rear passenger side tire has a screw in it. I'm heading out now to go get it fixed.

Thanks to those that made it today! I thought we had a great turnout and plenty of fun, combined with plenty of hard work :). We put up a few new signs, blocked off one off-shoot road and picked up some more trahs. Hopefully we can get somethign going for July too, I'd like to see if the RMFTC signs are still there... LOL.
