Oh come on, how much do you owe?
I have $1500 in checks sitting on my desk waiting to be mailed out for taxes
Not as bad as I was expecting but I hear you.

You gotta know the tax tables! That and have a good accountant, and work for yourself once in a while.

Write-offs are your friend. Owning a house, having your own business, claiming all the deductions you can, donating time/money/things.... :)

It's all about how good your accountant is... :)

Can you tell that I get back a few pennies this year?

I always kind of get a chuckle out of the people (no offense Jeff) who wait until the last day toe ven start working on their taxes, and then they are stressed, not knowing what forms to fill out, etc. I got started in late January, took me a few hours, and there you go. But then again, mine are pretty simple. No house, no kids, no dependants, only one source of income, yada yada.
Turbotax can be your friend! :)

Oh, I'm not stressed. I'm like you, single, one income, simple to do. I just don't like paying more at the end of the year, when they've already taken a nice chunk each payday during the year.

I hear ya! I've said for a long tim e we need to switch to a flat tax system, but that would benefit the rich and hurt the poor, and thats not politically correct. But hey, it works in other countries, why not the U.S.? Think of it, you make $35k a year, you get exactly $35k from your employer. Nothing is taken out of your paycheck, except for lets say Social Security. When you buy something, rather then paying 4% tax, or 8% tax, you might pay 20% tax, but no April tax crap, no 1040's or W-2's. No complicated tax codes that enable the peopel taht really know what there doing to cheat things much better then the average joe. You buy stuff, you pay taxes. You don't buy stuff, no taxes. Whats so hard about that? LOL.

Well the low and middle classes spend a larger % of their income than the rich. I probably spend 90% of my income whereas a rich CEO might spend 5% of his income. We're talking about a lot of lost tax money. Unless your happy with a growing national debt then that solution isn't going to fly.

A FLAT TAX NEEDS TO BE A PERCENTAGE OF YOUR TOTAL INCOME, NOT ON HOW MUCH YOU SPEND. MY TAXES WERE EASY THIS YEAR. A FULL TIME STUDENT WITH INCOME BELOW $8K. I'LL HAVE TO CLAIM MY TUITION AS I PAY ON THE LOANS BECAUSE TO CLAIM IT THIS YEAR WOULD HAVE PUT MY INCOME IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF -$13K. IT'S NICE WHEN YOU GET BACK EVERY PENNY YOU PAID PLUS EXTRA.

I've been getting a nice refund for a few years now. Of courst that's because I have large capital gains Losses from the stock market crash a few yrs ago. You can only claim so much per year but you can roll it over.

Niels, Courtney ran into the same situation this year because I was helping her with her taxes. She made about $5k total, but she spent like $20k on tuition. So she got refunds. Not very much, because she didn't pay much, but you get the idea.
My flat tax idea will have flaws but thats not my problem to figure out :). Perhaps keep the "luxury tax" in place so the wealthy are still being taxed their fair share, but I also am not the type of person that thinks its fair to tax someone 50% of their income simply because they have millions and can stand to loose some.
Either way, I think the current tax system sucks. Works great for those that can study it, figure out how to beat it, etc. bu for the rest of us, its just a pain in the ass.

Matt and I have had many discussions of a "flat-tax" system over the years and I'm all for it. Each year Americans have to spend HOURS of time and (for some) HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS just to have their taxes prepared - it's ridiculous!

A national sales tax (as Matt proposed) and/or flat-tax is the way to go in my opinion. Of course, there is LOTS of opposition - namely the behemoth called the IRS and thousands of CPAs across the country...

A CPA I know did my taxes in exchange for a case of beer.Somehow im getting money back, and i was claiming 3. This year ill be claiming 0, and hopefully have a decent refund next year.

I would like a flat tax too. I don't care if you make $1,000,000 a year or $20,000 a year..................It SHOULD be the same percentage! Rich people will give the government more money than po folks like me but the amount would be the SAME percentage of what is earned.

It'll never fly though

My wife was out of work for most of '04 so I thought we'd be okay. Well, we NEEDED money & a place she worked at in '03 told her take her 401k & roll it over or take a lump sum distribution. Seeing as how we needed money, she took the lump sum  We put enough aside to cover the 10% penalty & the additional tax on it but then ended up needing that too. So needless to say..............WE GOT BONED this year. It's our fault but I hate getting boned whether it's my fault or not.

I need money............anybody wanna buy my '72 F100 2wd, 429, C6, 3.70 gears? Runs great (pretty quick too) new front tires, couple rust spots in the front fenders...........$500.00 firm.
